Dave Danner
Hi all, Can anyone identify the uniform here? I am at sea when it comes to uniform questions.
The Prussian
Hello Dave! Garde-Regiment zu Fuß. 2., 3., or 4. Regiment. 2. (red shoulder straps) 3. (yelow shoulder straps) 4. (blue shoulder straps) He wears black leather, so it´s III. Bataillon of one of those regiments.
Dave Danner
Thanks! The picture is part of a gallery on Ancestry and is supposed to be Theodor Merten. However, he was a Lt.d.R. in Saxon LIR 103, and I don't think the other pictures in the gallery look quite like the same person. Are there specific ways to identify an Einjährig-Freiwilliger's uniform?
The Prussian
Hi Dave! I can´t see an officer in that photo. To me it´s an Unteroffizier. Einjährig Freiwillige had stripes pipings around the shoulder straps. Here is an example of Inf.Rgt.
Dave Danner
That makes sense. They probably mis-identified the photo.
dwmosher
Dave, I believe your guy is an Unteroffizier with one of the four Eisenbahn regiments, based on the litzen, Swedish cuff, the apparant silver fittings and black plume on the pickelhaube and the hint of a cypher on the shoulder strap. He also has a Schutzenabzeichen (1. Klasse) and a Winkerflaggen abzeichen on his sleeve Regards Dave
The Prussian
Hello! No, it´s not Eisenbahn. Note the cuffs. Eisenbahn had black cuffs, These here are red
dwmosher
Yes, but the shoulder strap indicates a cypher/number on it. None of the Prussian guard foot regiments with this cuff configuration have anything on the on the straps.
The Prussian
Well, it looks so, but it can´t be. There ain´t no other possibility with non-black cuffs and guard-helmet
dwmosher
I agree. The only thing that would make sense is the photo has been lighted (during the period). Initially, I thought the photo showed a feldgrau Friedensuniform, but it is not (white trousers were not worn w/ feldgrau for dress). So, the dunkelblau waffenrock, the black plume and black collar and cuffs have been lightened enough to change the shade we are seeing.
The Prussian
Please have a look at the plum and the belt. That´s black. The cuffs seem to be red. Blue for Train doesn´t fit, because Train had white belts
dwmosher
Eisenbahn (Verkehrstruppen) not Train, with a black belt as you have shown above.
The Prussian
I just wanted to say, that the cuffs are not blue (if someone would think, it could be Train...)
Chip
I'm not really seeing anything on the shoulder straps. Chip
