ray11 Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I am not sure what war 1 or 2 this came from or if it was awarded from war. has anyone seen one and can you identify it? thanks to all
Hugh Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Looks to me like Communist Czechoslovakia (Post WW II). I wouldn't think it's military.
ray11 Posted January 15, 2017 Author Posted January 15, 2017 (edited) Hi HUGH i was told it was a rare medal and was lead to believe it was a war medal but i really know nothing for sure. What do you think it was fore?Ray also told it was polish. Edited January 15, 2017 by ray11
Hugh Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I'm pretty convinced it's Czech. The white lion with two tails is Czech and there are not one but two Czech orders which reference the white lion. The red/white/blue background is the same as the Czech flag and the letters CSR probably stand for Czech Socialist Republic. (See the Wikipedia reference below) This item doesn't look like any of the Czech orders or medals I know, but I'm far from an expert on the Communist era awards. I'm hoping one of our better-informed members will weigh in. If forced to guess, I'd say that this might be a veteran's or commemorative badge. Let's wait to hear from the experts. Gordon Craig Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 ray11, The CSR indicates this artifact is from the Czech Socialist Republic. Not sure what it is but it is not an award. Certainly not rare. Whatever the seller is asking for it it is probably too much. Czechoslovakia has used this style lion in their awards for many years. Here is a link to Czech Communist era medals on the web. You can see the lion used there numerous times. https://www.google.ca/search?q=Czechoslovakian+communist+era+medals&safe=active&rlz=1C1LDJZ_enCA501CA501&espv=2&biw=1600&bih=901&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj-_q6G5MbRAhVLwYMKHRt1Bbc4ChD8BQgGKAE The next link will take you to look at some Polish Communist era awards. Note the use of an eagle an an emblem by Poland and the state colours or red and white. https://www.google.ca/search?q=polish+communist+era+medals&safe=active&rlz=1C1LDJZ_enCA501CA501&espv=2&biw=1600&bih=901&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwicyt7v5MbRAhUF7YMKHVGXD0sQsAQIGg Regards, Gordon
ray11 Posted January 31, 2017 Author Posted January 31, 2017 Gordon, thank you for your reply. The one thing that puzzles me you say it is not rare but in all the pictures in the links and in all my time collecting i have never seen one like this. I believe you when you say its not rare its just i can not find one like it. I am sure there are others. Of course I have never looked for one. And not to worry i did not pay hardly any thing for it. again thank you kindly. best,Ray
Gordon Craig Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 ray11, Perhaps I should have been clearer. You have not seen an ODM like this before because it is not one. Possible some sort of mommento given out by a civilian organization. Regards, Gordon
bilylev Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 (edited) Hello, CSR means Czechoslovak Republic, not socialist. This was an official abbreviation of the country since 1918. I have never seen such a badge before but it seems to be so called patriotic badge, I estimate from WW2 era, when different exile organisations were issuing them in big quantities. bilylev Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 (edited) Hello, ČSR means Československá Republika (Czechoslovak Republic), not socialist. This was an official abbreviation of the country since 1918. I have never seen such a badge before but it seems to be so called patriotic badge, I estimate from WW2 era, when different exile organisations were issuing them in big quantities. The name of the country was changed 1961 on Československá Socialistická Republika (Czechoslovak Socialist Republic), abbrevation ČSSR. In the years 1990 - 1992 the name was changed on Česká a Slovenská Federativní Republika, abbrevation ČSFR. Since 1992 the name is Česká Republika (Czech Republic), abbrevation ČR. All these abbrevations are used on medals. Regards Jan Edited February 1, 2017 by bilylev
