Craig Posted May 11, 2005 Posted May 11, 2005 If Firefly or any others feel this should be placed in another Forum please doI have a friend who has seen a photo of a Mulberry being launched and was sure the foreground shows an area of Hayling Island where he grew up. Can anyone tell me if this was where they were constructed and if anyone knows this photo apparently you can see a pub in the background.
Firefly Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 Wilsy, I think they were built all over the place to be honest. The programme was too big to concentrate it all in one place, so you may well be right. I do know that there was something like 45,000 men devoted to building the Mulberry harbours! A pretty astounding figure....
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 These are still off the coast of Normandy are they not?
leigh kitchen Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 (edited) A caisson is still on the beach at Littlestone, near New Romney (I only mention it because I used to spend a bit of time at Littlestone), it was washed up there after storms broke the British harbour at Aromanche up - quite neat when you consider that Mulberry components were stored or harboured just down the road at Dungeness. My old man went ashore in Normandy on the Arromanche harbour. The first 2 of these links refer to the Mulberrys & Hayling Island:http://www.hayling.co.uk/gallery/haylingphoto-221.htmlhttp://www.hayling.co.uk/gallery/haylingphoto-223.htmlhttp://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/trlout/TRA22190.htmlhttp://www.combinedops.com/Mulberry%20Harbours.htmhttp://www.normandiememoire.com/NM60Anglai...sto4_p03_gb.htmhttp://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/Engla...rryandPluto.htmhttp://www.burnham-on-sea.com/mulberry-harbour.shtml Edited January 6, 2007 by leigh kitchen
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Incredible that anyone came up with the idea to push big bloody blocks of concrete over the ocean ....

Chris Boonzaier Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Nah - they pulled them......Ahh yes... that made it a bit easier ;-)
leigh kitchen Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Pushing them made the rope go slack I s'pose.

There is a website which has details of mulberry harbour construction going on at Hayling. CLICK HERE to see it.Tom Edited March 4, 2007 by Tom Morgan
