Thracian Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Could a member help me to identify the British Indian Army cap badge illustrated. It dates from 1941. Thanks
Bayern Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 Thracian : The badge is not Indian . Its Canadian from the Highland Light Infantry Of Canada .observe the maple leaf in the center , the scroll and the beaver.
Thracian Posted February 20, 2018 Author Posted February 20, 2018 I am most grateful for your reply. The badge looks very similar to Highland Light Infantry but the wording is different and the emblem at the bottom seems to be that of an elephant ?
Thracian Posted February 20, 2018 Author Posted February 20, 2018 I see now it is Highland Light Infantry - thanks Bayern. It was in possession of a Canadian soldier in WW2 - possibly given by his Dad, as a keepsake, who may have fought with HLI in WW1.
peter monahan Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 I hate to disagree but I simply can't see a beaver in this badge and the elephant is not a feature of the HLI of Canada badge. Or are there two badges here and I'm confused? HLI on top, HLI of Canada below. I'm more interested in the 'locally made' wooden container to which it is attached. There should be a good story attached to that, as I'd guess the original owner of the badge commissioned the piece and said 'put this badeg on the front' or words to that effect. But where? S E Asia would be my guess, but just a guess.
peter monahan Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 No harm, no foul. As I say, the wooden container for some reason says 'Malay' or some such to me, so I wonder whether the Cdn chap had Dad's badge with him and paid a local to incoporate it into the souvenir. An interesting piece anyway.
