Unknown medal ribbons

Hi all,

I hope you’re safe and well?

So, these arrived in the post today. They were included in a WWI German medal group of a man who emigrated to the USA in 1923.

I don’t know much about American medals, so I’m guessing they are?

Any ideas what they are for?

Atlantic War Zone Bar
Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar

They were awarded as bars only. In 1992 a corresponding medal was created for them.

Awarded in WWII to mainly (I believe) Mercantile Marine personnel.
