The Prussian Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 (edited) Hello! I just received this french colonial medal. I´d like to know, if someone knows, if this is the first or second model. 1) 1893-1914 2) 1914-1962 Later it was renamed into "La médaille d´outre-mer" It has a clasp "Algérie" (from March 6, 1894) The front is signed by "Georges Lemaire" (unfortunately I couldn´t get it readable...) And the reverse: Thanks a lot!!!! Edited March 18, 2021 by The Prussian
graham Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 Not sure if this website is of any help: https://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/foreignguide/french/coloniall_medaille_coloniale.htm Looks like you have the 'Single sided suspension' made from 1930 - 1962.
The Prussian Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 (edited) Hello Graham! The site is very good! Thanks a lot! It really seems, that I´ve got a later one... The clasp "Algérie" was awarded for battles between 1830 and 1882. So I must say, the clasp would not belong to a 1930 model... Right? Edited March 19, 2021 by The Prussian
graham Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 The clasp was awarded for service into the early 1900's, so I assume a recipient could have applied for one from 1930 and received the later medal and the clasp at the same time, just a thought. https://hmc2.pagesperso-orange.fr/en/spotl/colbars.html#algerie
Hendrik Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 Hello Gentlemen, The above Colonial Medal is of the 2nd official type and manufactured by the Paris Mint (silver mark "1" between cornucopia). This type was manufactured between 1914 and 1962. The 1930 date on the northeastmedals website makes no sense to me ... The bar "ALGERIE" in the pictures was manufactured by the Paris firm of Arthus-Bertrand. It could be awarded for campaigns up till 1906. Regards, Hendrik
The Prussian Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 Hello! That makes me wonder. On different pages I really saw, because of the suspension it´s from 1930 or later...
Hendrik Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 Hi, It only needs one to make a mistake and then others copy it on from there ... I've seen it happen before ? Regards, Hendrik
The Prussian Posted March 20, 2021 Author Posted March 20, 2021 (edited) Merci beaucoup, Hendrik! So it´s possible, the medal is an early one. If the clasp is original, the wearer might had been partipicated in Algérie until 1882 (I´ve heard, the last Algérie-clasp was for battles in 1882) Edited March 20, 2021 by The Prussian

It could be awarded for campaigns up till 1906. The last action for which the clasp was allowed was a reconnaissance mission to Oued-Nesly under the command of a Major Pein between 23 and 30 January 1906. Your medal is from 1914 at the very earliest. I don't think it is possible to attribute it to a particular battle/campaign/mission unless you have information about its original recipient. Also, the time between the campaign and the award of a medal and bar may be considerable. By way of example, I have a Colonial Medal with clasp TUNISIE (last campaign ended in 1918 for that clasp) and its award certificate is dated November 1931 ... Tchüß, Hendrik
The Prussian Posted March 20, 2021 Author Posted March 20, 2021 Ah, ok! Very intersting news! This medal is quiet new to me... I´m glad, that my medal is in good condition. At the most medals the reverse (the earth) is invisible because it scratched at the uniform...
