Ravenft Posted April 13, 2021 Posted April 13, 2021 I love this cross so much. Just stunning medal. I was taking photos of it and just happened to catch a marking in between its arms. I've never seen a mark on one of these before. I hope someone can identify what it means. Thanks, Ravs
JapanX Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 Ravs, photos of the mark is around 20 КБ. Barely readable. Please make HQ clear photo of the mark. Better photos of obverse/reverse (at 90 degrees angle) would be also great (since marked specimens are quite rare). Any inscription at the back of the case?

Okay here are better pictures with my macro lens and higher resolutions Submitting them one at a time because of file size...
JapanX Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 Thanks for the HQ photos. Appreciate it! I know this mark. Here comes another one. This is an old form of kanji 濤 Today it is written as 涛 It reads waves or billows. Most likely the first kanji in the name of the owner of the workshop. Unfortunately as per today the owner of this mark is not known. Any inscriptions at the back of the case?

Other than the normal gold letters on the top of the box there’s no other inscriptions on the rear of the case. Did you mean around the hinges when you said “back of the case” Also Thank You so much for helping me with the name of the marking on the cross. I’ve never seen one of these with a marking before. Any clue as to the time period? The case looks like it has the Meiji style lettering on top. I very much appreciate your input. all the best, Ravs

I`d say first quarter of XX century. 1 hour ago, Ravenft said: The case looks like it has the Meiji style lettering on top. On the reliability of this notorious "meiji style" for dating of japanese orders. Regards, Nick
