Never seen this "makers mark" on a Japan Red Cross Order of Merit, can anyone ID?

I love this cross so much. Just stunning medal. I was taking photos of it and just happened to catch a marking in between its arms. I've never seen a mark on one of these before. I hope someone can identify what it means.

Barely readable. Please make HQ clear photo of the mark. 

Better photos of obverse/reverse (at 90 degrees angle) would be also great (since marked specimens are quite rare).

This is an old form of kanji 

 

濤

 

Today it is written as 

涛

 

It reads 

 

waves or billows.

 

Most likely the first kanji in the name of the owner of the workshop.

Unfortunately as per today the owner of this mark is not known.

Other than the normal gold letters on the top of the box there’s no other inscriptions on the rear of the case. Did you mean around the hinges when you said “back of the case”

 

Also Thank You so much for helping me with the name of the marking on the cross. I’ve never seen one of these with a marking before. Any clue as to the time period? The case looks like it has the Meiji style lettering on top.

Sometimes you can find the name of the lacquer shop that made the case or even the name of the workshop that made the order.

On the reliability of this notorious "meiji style" for dating of japanese orders.
