Jersey Bouy Posted October 23, 2021 Posted October 23, 2021 It took me a while to ID this belt but thanks to fellow collectors it was ID'd. It was replaced by a new design in 1973. Don't know if it is a rare bird but I have yet to see another. Just came in the mail today and it is NICE! Enjoy.
oamotme Posted October 23, 2021 Posted October 23, 2021 Good morning, I have a medallion with a similar design - possibly by Bichay of Cairo - but not confirmed. The reverse reads, Infantry Day 1 July 1972. Some manner of souvenir piece?? Regards, Owain
Jersey Bouy Posted October 23, 2021 Author Posted October 23, 2021 Or possibly a "sweet heart" piece?
oamotme Posted October 24, 2021 Posted October 24, 2021 Ha! Nice idea but I don't think the concept of 'sweet heart piece' ever reached the Middle East. I have just noted that both buckle and medal have the word 'Al Mashaah' (The Infantry) on the obverse. Regards, Owain
Jersey Bouy Posted October 24, 2021 Author Posted October 24, 2021 Yeah, on second though I will have to agree with you about the "sweet heart" concept. Thank you for translating the writing.
ChrisW Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 Jersey Buoy, That’s a very nice example of a belt with enameled branch of service insignia, thanks for posting. That’s the arm shield for the Infantry (al-Misha’a in Arabic). That particular design was used until around 2000 (I think, need to consult my notes). Owain, Your example may be a keychain. It’s particularly nice in that the reverse reads “Infantry Day, 2 April 1972.” That establishes several things: The specific date for the Infantry branch’s commemorative day, that your award was presented to an exemplary infantry enlisted man or officer, and that this particular design was used as early as 1972. Best, Chris

oamotme Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 Chris, On looking at my records my piece came from the Bichay estate. Owain
