Martin W Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Hi gents, hoping for a little help here. My dad passed away back in February. His medals always hung in a frame on the living room wall.He served in Korea and spent over 20 years in the reserves. However, when cleaning out draws at the home in England i was able to find his "Certificate of Service" book. Inside the book i found a ribbon bar with the GSM ribbon on it,but dad never had a GSM on his medal bar. I am back in California now but this has me confused and i am wondering if there is any way i can find out if dad was awarded the GSM ? is there a contact number for the MoD perhaps. Any help woud be appreciated. Thanks,Martin. 1
Elmar Lang Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Hello, I think that a first step could be doing a research in the database of the London Gazette: The Gazette | Official Public Record . There, I've been successful in finding names, awards and data of soldiers even back to the Napoleonic wars! All the best, Enzo (E.L.) 1
Michael Johnson Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 (edited) What regiment/unit(s) was your father with (from his service book)? As his son you should be able to request his medal entitlement from the MOD. https://www.gov.uk/apply-medal-or-veterans-badge/apply-for-a-medal#:~:text=How to apply, attorney or a death certificate. My understanding is that you can use this form to verify what medals he was entitled to - just mark it "entitlement only" Michael Edited May 24, 2022 by Michael Johnson 1
Martin W Posted May 25, 2022 Author Posted May 25, 2022 Thanks for the replies. Dad was in the 1st RTR in Korea, service number 22202939. I will try to access the links provided above. Again, thank you for your help. Cheers,Martin.
Michael Johnson Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 His number denotes a late 1950 enlistment date. He could have served in Malaya, but no rolls are available online. Michael
Martin W Posted May 29, 2022 Author Posted May 29, 2022 Hi Michael, here are a couple of pages from Dad's Certificate of Service. Looks like he enlisted in March 1948 and no mention of service in Malaya. Cheers,Martin.
