Marcon1 Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 THE PORTUGUESE ARMED FORCES CAMPAIGNS COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL Created in November, 30, 1916, by decree nr. 2870, together with the War Cross, this medal commemorated the campaigns of the armed forces outside metropolitan Portugal, mainly due to the context of the Portuguese participation in World War I. As indicated in Article 6 of the specific regulations to this medal, published January 18, 1917, the Campaign medal was also directly linked to the Queen D. Amélia medal, which, since 1902, worked as a general service medal. All campaign bars approved for the latter could be used in the former. The CAMPAIGNS COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL awards “the military who have served in campaign situation” (Art. 46, Regulation 2002). DESIGN OBVERSE: National emblem, encircled with the legend «CAMPANHAS E COMISSÕES ESPECIAIS DAS FORÇAS ARMADAS PORTUGUESAS» (Campaigns and Special Commissions of the Portuguese Armed Forces), in uppercase elzevir font, encircled in turn by a laurel wreath; on top, a mural crown with 5 towers; REVERSE: disc with, on the upper part, a National Banner; imposed on it, the figures of a soldier of the Army, to the right, a soldier of the Air Force, in the middle, and a sailor of the Navy, to the left, standing on a pedestal; encircling, the legend «ESTE REINO É OBRA DE SOLDADOS» (This Kingdom is the Work of Soldiers”), in uppercase elzevir font; on top, the same crown mural, as on the obverse. I have no reason to question if they are genuine but I have questions as they seem to be made of different metals, are different sizes and thicknesses and have different ribbons.
sumserbrown Posted October 3 Posted October 3 Medal 1 has a diameter of 38.8mm and thickness 3.1mm at the 3 o'clock position Dense metal Medal 2 diameter 37,7mm, thickness 1.4mm. Same density metal as #1 Medal 3 diameter 38.0mm, thickness 1.7mm but noticeably less dense metal Is this all normal? thanks in advance Rob
Marcon1 Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Hiya, Although Angola is not my field of collecting, here are some observations. Medal 1 is the 1949-71 version. Text on front = different than on the next 2. Medal 2 and 3 are the 1971-2002 versions. Also, note the different loops at top of medal. As with many long running medals there can be different manufacturers which might explain the differences. As for the ribbon, it should be red-green-red, but the red-white-red could be a variation denoting different branch of the armed forces. For these please ask someone with more knowledge concerning Portuguese medals/ribbons. Regards, Marcon1.
