Marcel60 Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 Greetings, Almost ten years have passed since I joined this forum. Shortly after joining, I stopped collecting Japanese medals. Recently I decided to remove the dust from my small collection and start again. Nice to see that my old account data were not lost on this forum. I will need some time to read all posts in the Japan forum from the last ten years. 🙃 On my Rising Sun 3rd class I found a marking which I had not noticed before. I found a posting listing 2 letter codes, maybe my eyesight is not yet fully developed 😉but I didn't see this one in the posts I've read so far. Could I be right in assuming this one is from the early 1980's? Still lots to catch up on. Marcel
JapanX Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 Yes, this Rising Sun belong to 1980/1981 https://asiamedals.info/threads/two-letter-and-letter-digit-marks-on-japanese-orders-and-medals.13720
Marcel60 Posted November 16, 2023 Author Posted November 16, 2023 Thank you for your reply. I had seen that list.but couldn't help notice that it is not always in alphabetical order. Some combinations appear later. Must be a logical explanation (?). Marcel
JapanX Posted November 16, 2023 Posted November 16, 2023 (edited) These are internal mint codes. Their actual purpose is still unknown (official mint representative couldn`t explain their purpose). Despite some inconsistencies there is a clear alphabet/time correlation. Edited November 16, 2023 by JapanX 1
