NormanW Posted August 29 Posted August 29 I have had a request for help from someone whose father was a Special in WWII. As far as I can tell, he was probably in the LNER police. There is nothing written about railway police specials, although from the LNER arm band, they numbered in the thousands! Would a member of a non Home Office police "Special Constabulary" unit have been eligible to receive the Special Constabulary Long Service medal?
Dave Wilkinson Posted August 29 Posted August 29 The original Royal Warrant of 30th August 1919,which was subsequently amended several times, gives the delegated power to award the medal to the Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department or the Secretary of State for Scotland upon the recommendation of the Chief Officer of Police. The Railway Police forces did not come under the remit of the Home Office, so it would appear that on the face of it, special constables appointed by the Railway Companies were not eligible. Dave.
NormanW Posted August 29 Author Posted August 29 Thank you Dave, I thought the same having looked at the London Gazette. But police medals are a specialist area I have little knowledge of. Norman
