Verdienstmedaille der DDR, instituted: 4 June 1959 and awarded to GDR citizens and those of fellow socialist states who had distinguished themselves through special achievements and faithful fulfillment of duties in building socialism.

The medal could be conferred only once upon the same individual. If the recipient was a military or a member of other uniformed services, the medal was worn on a pentagonally folded ribbon.

Great to see the version for wearing in uniform, the civil one on rectangular mount is more often seen... thank you for sharing.
