    1. I'd say leave it as is too. A mate had one of these with what he thought was bullet damage, the dent was a few mm deep, no cracks and nicely rounded but not being there at the time means you can only guess at what hit it. I bet whatever it was, it made the bloke behind the plate jump for a second.
    2. Thanks Alex and thanks for the tip as well. I'm using a programme (PS Pro x4) on the laptop to do the colouring and I think my main problem is just not understanding exactly what I can do with it. I've coloured the bike now but still haven't attempted the background. That SS Generalmajor had an unfortunate surname but I bet no one laughed in his face.
    3. Nice one Jens! I imagine he must have been a later entry into the war as I can't find him in the casualty lists and the contents of his tin are as new. Is there any way of researching him online?
    4. Here’s a pair of pretty much complete Robra, DRPa marked gasmask glasses and tin (stamped Schumacher Crefeld) including spare straps and needle and cotton to sew them on. I don’t know where or when I bought them but wouldn’t mind some help regarding the man named inside the lid. It looks like Wilhelm Janssen or Janßen from Krefeld, his street(?) and house number but I've no idea about 2/118. Is 2/118 his unit perhaps? After checking the Verlustlisten I’ve found a couple of names that fit but to different units: 1 - 13/7/15 Wilhelm Janssen III, Krefeld, 2/7 Jaeger died of wounds 2 - 16/8/16 Wilhelm Janssen I, Krefeld, 2/7 Jaeger killed 3 - 19/9/16 Wilhelm Janßen, Krefeld, 1 Garde Regt. zu Fuss, slightly wounded Any ideas about 2/118 inside the lid and the name of the street? Could they be Reichswehr rather than Imperial? Tony

All of your paintwork is good Steve. Is the shield original?

Mate, you do it how it best pleases you. I like unobtrusive Is the one above painted on one of those grease tins? Looks great.
    8. Sturnhorn, Welcome to the forum. I think EH is Hörster, a German maker who merged with FH (F. Hörster) from 1870 onwards, later becoming E & F Hörster.
    9. Not in the same league a Alex and Larry but I've had another dabble at colouring, I'm having no luck whatsoever with the background so left it as is. An unknown soldier, possibly in the 1920s or may be a little earlier.

      French ID tag help

Yes the book, History of the 111th Inf. Regt. only goes up to 1/7/16 and a pity he isn't mentioned on the Roll of Honour, but being only 16 pages long a lot has probably been left out.

      French ID tag help

Francois, Thanks very much for the reply! I also found a book about 111e RI online, I think the fallen should be named in this book(?) http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k6235197q/f17.item.zoom however, although J. Paulian can be found as a member of this unit on Memoire des Hommes, the name Paulian isn’t in the book. If anyone's interested there's a brief description about the involvement of 111e RI in the battle at the beginning of the book and there's also a write up on Chris' site http://www.kaiserscross.com/41815/329201.html Tony

      French ID tag help

Hello, I need a bit of help with this French ID tag named to Jules Paulian, I checked the Memoire des Hommes site and found a man named Jules Evariste Paulian who was killed in Dieuze, 20/8/14. The tag doesn’t show a middle name but other points appear to fit according to the casualty paperwork for JE Paulian: Class 1907 Recruitment area Nice Number 30 Do you think it's definite, unlikely or a definite maybe that Jules Paulian and Jules Evariste Paulian are the same person? Thanks for any help. Tony
    15. I'm guessing the same as Steve on this. There are plenty for sale with 'H' but tracking down a proper explanation is difficult.
    16. These sites might be of interest http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/staff/hartleyi/bobclasp.htm http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/british_index.htm Tony
    17. Thanks Chip. There's a weak circular mark in the recess where the handle sits but it's not clear.
    18. That's good but it's very likely they used the older type in WWII as well I reckon, no need to chuck them if they're still held in the stores. I picked this one up on the Somme the other day so could just as easily have been used WWII and left somewhere sort of dry/under cover the last 70 odd years. I need to look for and markings on it but don't think I'll find them.
    19. I picked up an old rusty ammo tin the other day and wondered if I'm correct in assuming it's a WWI period manufactured MG08 tin (I think the handles were different post war). After a bit of a clean I managed to get it open and although it's rusty outside, the original colour's still present inside. Are these marked anywhere with a year of manufacture? It's nothing exciting but I like it.
    20. Shame about that but the crossings should be a good little project too. Yes I saw that, I wonder if it's still there or if a bargain hunter has snapped it up along with some of those other cheapies like the 180 odd euro WWII home front helmet and the RASC sweetheart badge
    21. That's a nice lot Chris. Do you think you'll be able to research his service?
    22. That's a nice find. I was lucky enough to find a BWM hiding away in the same place and named to a Brig. Gen. 2 years ago.
