this is the reverse of the cup apologies for the poor photos i discovered that taking photos of the reverse of silver cups is difficult part of a fairly large japanese collection that has come on the market here in new zealand if anyone can see a date it would be appreciated

hi all just a question re this saki cup I believe this is the official version of imperial mum used by the Japanese royal family it has what looks like a silver mark on the base of the cup as well as an inscription around the outside edge but the photography is not the best was wondering if this makes it some type of official presentation thanks

hi all I recently purchased this medal of honour dated 1952 may the 1st to matsuzawa masakatsu I normally only collect ww2 or earlier Japanese items but have found it difficult to find a medal from this period but I found out from rich catalanos research that only 403 medal of honour (all colours) were issued in 1952 so it makes it a bit scarce I think, does anyone know or is there a reference as to the number of light blue medals issued that year thanks

many thanks guys hi mervyn thanks for the info I think the silver ship on the lid may have been added at a later date as both rotorua named ships were launched in 1910 and 1911 the later ship was originally called the Shropshire and was purchased in the 1930s by the nz shipping company from a british shipping company I have added a picture of the rotorua sunk in 1917 note only 2 masts compared to the 5 on the ship sunk in 1940 the dish is quite small, the ship on the lid has 5 masts thanks for the information looking into the history of these new Zealand ships has been very interesting

hi all I just thought I would add this silver and tortoise shell pot with a picture of the new Zealand shipping company ship ss rotorua on the lid also a post card of the ship its story shows what dangers merchant shipping faced in 1940 the ship was subject to 15 torpedo attacks on one voyage whilst in the atlantic damaged it was repaired in panama on a later convoy (hx92) in 1940 outward bound to Australia the convoy was attacked by a wolfpack and lost 15 ships the ss rotorua had 75 feet of a stabilizer blown off and again was repaired in panama homeward bound in December 1940 it was struck by a torpedo fired by u96 and sank with the loss of 21 lives including the captain and convoy commander rear admiral fitzgerald as a footnote the previous ship of this name was sunk in the English channel in 1917 by uc17

hi give it miss for the above reasons unfortunately the collectors world is awash with reproductions and fakes if you are looking for a cheaper sword to display the Chinese are producing some really convincing reproductions of Japanese ww2 military swords that are difficult to tell from genuine Japanese ww2 swords

hi all a couple of artillery cups from my collection for the irish gunner I really like the Krupp heavy gun cup nice detail, I did a bit of research on the Krupp heavy guns used by the Japanese they purchased over a 100 from Krupp for use as fortress defence around important Japanese sea ports over 20 were dismantled and sent to port Arthur during the russo Japanese war to reduce the Russian fortifications
