Hi, I seem to remember some time ago reading that war time wound badges were made of steel and that due to material shortages it is generally accepted that brass based badges are post 1918? Is this accepted fact or was it just a theory? Thanks Chris

Sometimes a seemingly boring Iron Cross award document can suddenly become very interesting with a bit of lucky research, this is the case for this award of the Iron Cross 2nd Class for a Gefreiter in the 3rd Bavarian Infantry Regiment for the fighting on the Stochod in 1916. Harry is on the move again, the Gurkha at Tor in Sinai putting another pin in his map. A small update to the Machine Gun Photo Album HERE

Here is a pic of a similar tunic... the officer in question must have transfered in from another branch and as the bavarian cavalry seems to be the only ones with this constalation, maybe that was his origin. Now, this may sound like wishful thinking, but it is not... The loops on this (see post 7) are really low, and they are 3.6cm apart. No Iron Cross 1st class fits... I had thought one of the Bavarian higher MVOs, but not for an Leutnant. When I saw the card pictured here, I wondered if it may not have been for an observer badge as well? I think quite a few cavalry officers were also flyers? Anyway, as I said, not wishful thinking on my part... I really wanted a Bavarian infantry officer... cavalry is pretty low on my list and I have never been interested in flyers (if thats what the badge was)

I promised myself i would steer clear of spiked helmets, but as this one was one of the regiments the wifes greatgrandfather served in, I thought I would buy it. I posted it years ago, apparently this KKK like Helmet cover is typical for the G.R. 101

The secret to my knowledge is having someone saying over my shouldr "thats a good deal!" then I buy it, get home, google it... and usually find out it wasn't :-)
