    2. Oh apologies - "Sovereign Military Order of Malta". 922F refers to it as well as the "Sovrano Militare Ordine di Malta" Jim
    3. I've seen dark blue, light blue and red....this is the first black one. As I have never looked this up specifically I was glad to learn that this was "GIL" and not "CIL". I also never came across the "ONB" ones either!!! Big thanks to Elmar and Spasm for the bacground info. Jim
    4. I would have have guessed at it being an SMOM award, although I am not familiar with it. However, eight pointed cross + crown would make me more inclined in that direction. Jim
    5. Thanks UB. Slightly caught up with work for a couple of days so that limits my ability to research questions and answers. Appreciate your filling the void. As is customary, I will skip trying to reply to this question as I have given up my right to ask it...... ......in your very good hands gentlemen!!! Jim
    6. OK - question open to any member who wants to take it up. Otherwise, I'll post something tomorrow. Caught up with work stuff at the moment! Jim

    8. I am the Palace of the Republic, built on the site of the Berli Statdtschloss..... construction finished in 1976 only to find, in 1990, that the building contained asbestos. The building was demolished with the steel being sold for use in the Dubai Burj Khalifa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palast_der_Republik Jim

    10. Question 86 My life has spanned a century of changes. I am highly decorated and well respected. I have also been on the forefront of the USSR military fist. Who am I? When was I at the forefront of the USSR military fist? What am I quoted as saying on my last birthday? Good hunting. Jim

    12. Hi Gunner 1, You are of course free to stop participating in the Soviet Quiz at any time. However do understand that I cannot accomodate requests from any member to remove their scores as this is a cumulative effort and yours has been a very valid contribution to the success of the 2011 version of the quiz. The fact that you have decided to leave the quiz does not in any way diminish your participation. Neither does it diminish the fact that you have succeeded in answering several questions, some of which were rather challenging. Your score stands as an achievement to your credit. The quiz scoreboard will be reset as of 1/1/2012 when the quiz will be locked and a new one will start from scratch. Only the names of 2012 participants will be included. On a personal note, I am sorry to see you go. There have been a number of frustrating questions. However do bear in mind that the quiz includes, not only members from different countries, but also members whose first language is not English. It includes members who come from different backgrounds, cultures, levels of education etc. This basically means that the same question may be tackled by different members in just as many different ways. I have intervened a number of times on questions which I thought were too complex or too cryptic, taking myself out of the running of the quiz whenever I did so. However, I never felt there was any need to get involved with question that were answered within a day or two. Ultimately, there remains an element of poetic licence in most questions and the underlying hints. Gunner, I will reiterate that your participation was highly valued and surely, appreciated by all who took on your challenge. I hope that this will turn out to be more of an "au revoir" than an "adieu" and may I remind you that we all remain one post away. Regards, Jim
    13. Hi Christophe, I barely make it as often as I would like to so I was very lucky to get here on time!! We'll wait for UB to confirm (or otherwise) ... Jim
    14. Sounds like Leonid Brezhnev and the Order of Victory to me...... Conferred order on himself but posthumously revoked in 1989 for not having met the award criteria. Jim
    15. Scoreboard update! 22 points - JimZ 16 points - Harvey 12 points - UB6365 11 points - Hauptmann 10 points - Christophe 8 points - Gunner 1 3 points - Valter 2 points - kapten_windu 1 point - Tachel Question 85 above..... Jim
    16. Hi Gunner - just to confirm Harvey's point that even though the answer may fit the question, it may not necessarily be the correct answer. Keep it up guys! And keep those questions and answers coming! Jim
    17. No worries Harvey....just as long as you're not away for a week, we'll wait. Jim
    18. Hi Harvey, If you can please try to post a question by today as its almost been two days now. I will otherwise have to pass it on to keep the quiz moving. Hope you're around and manage to set the next challenge! Jim
    19. Scoreboard update! 22 points - JimZ 16 points - Harvey 11 points - Hauptmann 11 points - UB6365 10 points - Christophe 8 points - Gunner 1 3 points - Valter 2 points - kapten_windu 1 point - Tachel Harvey is back in the scrum!!! Question 84 is all his to ask..... Jim
    20. Hi Harvey, Welcome back - Long time no see! You are indeed correct....I hoped you liked my description of the Order of Friendship of Peoples, which I consider one of the most beautiful Soviet ODMs! I think the RF variation leaves so much to be desired. With most of the new versions of the older Soviet ODMs, the desire to break away from the older design has washed all aestethic qualities down the tubes. In true nouveau riche fashion, the bling might be there but the taste is completely lacking. There I feel better!!! The point is yours as is the next challenge. Jim
    21. Question 83 I look like I'm worth 70 diamonds but I'm not - I am more of a studded punk. Considered pretty by many, I was dressed in white, blue, red, gold and green. I met my untimely demise at the end of 1991 when I was only 19. I was renamed, and with all that was beautifu battered out of me.....I was reborn three years later. What can I say, life under the USSR was so much more radiant than under the Russian Federation, and now, I am but a shadow of myself. What am I? Attach my picture before my demise AND my picture after in a side by side comparison. Regards, Jim
    22. Thanks for that Freiwillige....Now we know what "im" means. Cyrillic caps are one things....small case is another...... abbreviations OMG!! Jim
    23. Scoreboard update! 22 points - JimZ 15 points - Harvey 11 points - Hauptmann 11 points - UB6365 10 points - Christophe 8 points - Gunner 1 3 points - Valter 2 points - kapten_windu 1 point - Tachel Question 83 to follow soon..... Jim
