    1. Another question : About when this type of sidecaps were introduced in the british Army ? they have a neat austro hungarian flavour . some are almost identical to AH cavalry sidecaps . and the AH caps are modelled in the Bocskai cap of hungarian roots. It could be of interest to search about the cause of the apparition in the british Army of precisely this pattern of sidecap and not other

    2. Chris : With the Bunte Rock , only the prussian machine gunners and the Jager zu Pferde used to wear brown leather footwear and belts ammo pouchs and so on . With the introduction of the field grey uniform the use of brown leather items was generalized . so the men marched in 1914 with rather fauve than brown leather equipment , including belts . the officers went to battle with the leather and brocade feldbinbe . suspended of which carried the pistol into a brown leather holster , the binoculars and a map holster . the junior officers not mounted , carried in addition a small offiziere tornister at the back supported by leather straps . the colour was more fawn than brown .

    3. Peter : I think that the mounted man is an officer ,almost certainly a Hauptmann . and so impossible to be black . to me the man exhibes a brutal sun tanning ,produced by many days marching under the heavy sun of the european summer. i had seen other photos of officers and men resting without headgear and the contrast between the colour of the brow with the rest of the face is notable .

    4. A notable career , forged into the battlefields . a example of the spirit of 1813 in Prussia  into the frame of king Frederick William III manifesto An mein Volk . Zimmermann , was a wealthy burguess and educated , not till 1813 an aspirant or eligible to pursuit a career into the Army at least not in a Infantry or Cavalry unit . He made one into a elite unit . surprisingly he received only the EK 2 . the reason resides perhaps into the fact that he received promotions and finally commission . another form of awards . Very interesting .

    5. Yes its an officer or senior NCO sword knot and wurttembergian . WW1 era . the type was common to all officers and beamte .regardless of the regiment . the prussian sword knots were almost identical but with the bottom in black and the leather strap black with silver lace lines . the bavarians were different , the strap was of silver brocade and the form of the knot or gland nearly oval .

    6. Hello GreyC : Both are as the Prussian says ,dragoons . they wears the tunique dolman , a frogged jacket that was put in service in 1885 and remained until 1905 when its was replaced with the simpler tunique 1905 .

    7. Dante : Glad to serve. In my last post I forgot something about the Train, there were no specifically trained Trainoffiziere, normally the officers of the Trainbataillonen were former cavalry or artillery officers commisioned to the formations . whereas NCOs and troopers actually were. Traintruppe . both used the uniform of the Train and were considered mounted I dont know how was the mechanism to send a officer to the Train but some sources suggested that the Train formations received officers whose respective regiments had no longer a place for them ..

    8. Hello : A ordonnanzoffizier , was as you states a personal helper of a high command , a divisional or army corps one , normally a lieutenant or captain , he was part of the entourage but not a member of the staff . eyes and ears of the general , was also his messenger. quite a complicated job . Andre Tardieu a notable french politician was in 1914 with 38 years of age mobilized as lieutenant de reserve . he served 4 months as officer d ordonnance to the not yet marshall Foch . after he served under gral Joffre in the same role and in this post he created a efficient informations service. information , spionage .

    9. Not much , the Netherlands Army , adopted in 1912 a field grey uniform , the same was in use during ww2 till 1940 at least . Numerically the dutch Army was in August of 1914 of about 88000 men raised to nearly 200000 by mobilization . in May 1940 the men mobilizated amounted to 280000 . Take a look to the site www waroverholland nl .

    10. Hello : The Beautiful kepi dates probably from pre WW1 era . and with most precision from 1900 1914 . interesting detail is the  lower ring of soutache around . if it is silver that denotes a division general with special appointment . Pre WW1 the height of the kepi was matter for hot discussions . Regulations established one thing and the fashion others . existed the kepi named polo more or less like the today one , favoured by the youngs , existed the kepi Saumur , taller , and the kepi foulard , nearly a tiare as a journalist of the time wrote . Enfin , c est la France . generally speaking the pre ww1 kepi is taller and less stiffened than the wartime models . and the brim slightly angled . late the brim got horizontal .

    11. To The Prussian : I had seen before the photo of german officer and others , and i said too , that to me the others are finns . Dutch no , the dutch army styled a high collar not a stand and fall . In reference to the dutch Army and others , exists a book of Blandford Press Army badges and insignia of WW2 . author : Guido Rossignoli . the book is in two parts the second contains British Commonwealth France , Netherlands , included the Colonial Army , Yugoslavia and Japan . In all cases Rossignoli gives a description not only of the badges , gives about the uniforms and the organization .

    12. Hello : The N coul be for Naik . Naik was a rank in the Indian British Army and is one in today India and Pakistan Armies .is the equivalent of the two chevrons rank in the British Army . below Naik stands the lance Naik .
