South African Prisons Service Cross for Valour (Ruby) (CPF) (1980 -1996) Instituted in 1980 Awarded for valour in the line of duty, or in protecting or saving life or property. 33 Awards were made, the first (1982) being to WO F.E. O'Ehley, for single-handedly breaking up a prison fight, in which he was injured.

A red-enamelled gold Maltese cross with a diamond in the centre superimposed on a white-enamelled Maltese cross (obverse).

South African Prisons Service Star for Excellence (SPE) (1980-1996) Instituted in 1980 Awarded to general officers, for excellent service which promoted DCS efficiency. A green-enamelled 6-armed 12-pointed gold star displaying a smaller gold star with a diamond in the centre (obverse). It is worn on a neck ribbon.

Medal for Faithful Service in the South African Prisons Service For 18 years exemplary service (or 12 years for officials who already held the old 18-year long service medal). A bronze clasp was added after 33 years service.

Medal for Merit in the South African Prisons Service Instituted in 1968 retrospective to 1966. Awarded to a member of the SA Prisons Service who had, in the performance of his duties, rendered particularly, meritorious or exemplary service or distinguished himself by his ingenuity, efficiency or perserverance, or for a period of not less than 35 years meritorious service.

The Decoration for Valour in the South African Prisons Service (CPV) Instituted on 26 February 1968 and discontinued in 1980. Awarded for conspicuous and exceptional gallantry, or acts in which a member of the Prison Service risked or lost his life attempting to save others. Only 3 awards were instituted in 1968 1. The Decoration for Valour in the South African Prisons Service (CPV) 2. The Medal for Merit in the South African Prisons Service 3. The Medal for Faithful Service in the South African Prisons Service According to a former General of the SA Prisons Sevice, the late Gen Piet Frysen, only 7 bravery decorations were awarded. Only 1 member received all three awards. I'm previledge and honoured to have that set in my collection

The Prisons Department Faithful Service Medal Indtituted in 1965, the medal was awarded to a member who had completed 18 years of service (not necessarily continuous), during which time he was to have displayed examplary conduct and have been of unimpeachable character. It could also be awarded to a member who had displayed exceptional devotion to duty in a distinguished or gallant manner, in which case a bar bearing the inscription VERDIENSTELIK - MERITORIOUS was included.

The South African Prisons Service Specific date instituted is unknown, but between 1951 - 1952 according to a former General. Not much information available, but awarded to prison officers in recognition of 18 years of exemplary service. A "MERIT" clasp was awarded with the Medal to denote awards made in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service or acts of gallantry.

The South Africa Service Medal Instituted by the President of the Republic of South Africa in 1998. It was awarded to veteran cadres of Umkhonto we Sizwe and the Azanian People's Liberation Army for operational service inside South Africa during the "struggle",
