    1. The 100mm smoothbore gun is for both conventional ammunition and missiles. I think it originally used AT8, but that may have been for the export market. As for the 30mm, it supposedly has a dual feed capacity, where as the Rarden cannon fires in 3 round clips. The Rarden cannon was able to destroy T55s with comparative ease, I have read, but the thing is 40-50 years old, and designed to penetrate the West in waves with long range fuel tanks and low silhouete. Typically Soviet... wub.gif
    2. What was the popint of the American civil war? It was presumably about slavery, but they had segregation /apartheid that went on for 150 years. Why bother?
    3. Who was the longest serving , ever copper,in the world?
    4. I wouldn't call it a decisive battle. Even if he had destroyed the BEF , he still would have had to cross the channel and, of course, destroy the RAF. jumping
    5. Yup its a shame. I always thought we would rule the waves. Bring back Cochrane, size was no problem for him , he saw it as a hinderance. animal
    6. Why did the Royal Flying Corps change its name to become the Royal Air Force? What changed within the organisation ? Who decided this?
    7. I saw today that the former President will be lying in state , attended to by "The Old Guard".I thought that this was the name of Napoleon Bonaparte's senior Household Guard. Any one help?
    8. I read in the Telegraph today that this country's MOD is descaling the Navy down to something the size of the Task Force sent to the Malvinas.... What a frightening thought... I do hope that in hostile times that this minor armada is going to be enough. This government wants everything on the cheap. I think we're finished as the superpower we once were. Remember Lord Cochrane , what a man! the man who created Chile.Genius.
    9. Whats the most decisive battle of WWII. For me it is the Eastern Front. Stalingrad or I think , more probably the 3 day Battle of Kursk....
    10. How about a troop carrier that is armored , tracked, a crew of 3+7, a 100mm smooth bore gun, a 30mm cannon, At-8 A/T missiles, automatic grenade launcher and 2 X PK MGs . Oh and a feeling of superiority....
    11. Cripes , well I'm not supporting the Weimar Republic then....
    12. Its possible - they issued badges for just about everything else! wub.gif
    13. Cripes! Did they run around with 16 stretchers , chasing people who only wanted wanted a Band aid, too?! Or am I just being mean
    14. Sounds like the Merkava , mk 4. As the IDF have the most modern tank combat experience, they have constantly updated their Armour. This beast apparently has 360 degree cctv coverage and massive armour protection. Little is known about this Mk. They have always used the principles of survivorability and firing first above all else.

      Forlorn Hope

I believe that the term, "Forlorn Hope" , comes from the Dutch term, "Verlorene Hoop", meaning 'lost troop'. As there were large Dutch contingents in the British Army in the Peninsular War. I have never seen or heard of an example , though. It could have been an unofficial thing of that era, or just something the Riflemen did.
    16. With the current Political Correctness, and modern Germany's attitude to the previous War, do you think its likely that they will ever, under any circumstances, ever re-instate the Iron Cross ?
    17. and Challenger are capable of good cross country speeds. And as for either of them? I'd go with a British crewed Challenger everytime.
    18. At least you could probably outrun a Tiger ! The Abrams and
    19. You sound like Wittmann man! What about the Panther? This was a far superior design to the Tiger 1.
    20. This chap was quite a chararcter by all accounts, and sounded very'intense'. He joined the police in 1929 and served most of his career in Airborne units. He was wounded no less than three times, during Eben Emael , Crete & Tunisia. He suffered a particularly bad head wound in Crete , shortly after landing , in action against the New Zealanders. He died in a Car accident in 1943, in Germany.
    21. An extremely emotional subject. I have often wondered what would so many of those young men's fates , had their actions been in a later theatre or War. I cannot help thinking that terrible mistakes were made. Young men in the trenches for weeks at a time , in terrible conditions , under constant threat of violent death, a long way from home, with no look forward. Were they just victims of desperate times, used as an example to 'stop the rot' spreading. Your thoughts...
    22. Can anyone provide a comprehensive break down of the US awards system? How are they awarded ? Who decides? For instance inorder to be recommended for the British Victoria Cross you have to have had a 90% to 100% of dying. I would also like to find out the facts behind the Purple Heart.
    23. What was the Weimar Republic and where did its loyalties lie?
