Soviet Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz
Christophe replied to Christophe's topic in Russia: Soviet: Other Militaria
Christian, I think you got it!!!! As your answer to questions #3 is far more precise than mine. I did not mention Chuikov, even if I knew that Chuikow was buried there, being (I think) the only Soviet Union Marshal not buried in Moscow... But, I did not realized Chuikov helped in the design... Congrats!!! Cheers. Ch. -

Soviet Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz
Christophe replied to Christophe's topic in Russia: Soviet: Other Militaria
Hi Christian, Thanks for your kind words about the Quiz. You are probably right to correct my modesty. This Quiz is potentially the No. 1 thread of this Forum, and, even if it not a target in itself, we'll probably reach the first position (thanks to all of you) in both views and posts!!! So, at that time, there will be no discussion ... About the 25/50 pages, for display, I use the Forum Default settings. If you want to change yours, please, go there : My Controls / Board Settings. Hope this helps. Cheers. Ch. -
Soviet Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz
Christophe replied to Christophe's topic in Russia: Soviet: Other Militaria
Hi Christian and All!!!! Just coming back from a week long trip abroad, and I can see that, again, our little quiz has been extremely dynamic thanks to all of you!!! We have even broken out the barrier of the 10,000 views, and are close to the 1,000 answers!!!! Congratulations!!!! The idea here, was not initially to be one of the most "active" thread, but more to relax in learning, discovering some new historical aspects of our common passions. I think we have more than fulfilled these two objectives!!!! And, I have to say that all the posts in this quiz are of outstanding value and quality!!! Just read again the quiz since its beginning and you will see!!!!! Christian, other threads are also very "performing" in the Forum : * The "Tinnie Database", launched on 21 Jan. 2006 by Nick, our Chairman : 1,170 answers and 8,500 views !!!! http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5051 * "A Collection of Awards" , launched on 4 Feb. 2006 by WAR LORD, where Christopher displays his extraordinary collection : 479 answers and 13,840 views !!!! http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5516 I think these two are the most "popular" ones... Here are now, on this "historical" moment, some new stats : This small game has now been launched 16 months ago now (on 1 Nov. 2005), and since : * 84 questions asked, * with 990 answers, * and 50 pages of Q&As. * This quiz has been viewed more than 10,120 times. * 31 Members of the Forum played, and 23 correctly answered at least 1 question : Nb of good answers : * 14 : Christian (Zulus) * 10 : Christophe * 9 : Bryan (Soviet) * 8 : Simon (Red Threat) * 4 : Ed (Haynes) and Wild Card. * 3 : Andreas (Alfred), Auke (Ferdinand), Belaruski, and Kim (Kimj). * 2 : Carol I, Chuck (in Oregon), Franck (Knarf), Gerd (Becker), Ivan (Piramida), Jan (vatjan), and Order of Victory. * 1 : Darrell, Daredevil, Dave (Navy FCO), Dudeman, Rick (Stogieman) and Steen (Ammentorp). This is a great achievement. Thanks to all for your participation. Now, let's continue to have fun with the 85th question... Auke's one!!! Cheers. Ch. -

Only 6 "Poilus" still alive !
Christophe replied to Christophe's topic in The Great War 1914 to 1918
Only 2 "Poilus" still alive ! Jean Grelaud, one of France's 3 last World War I veterans, has died on 25 February, at age 108. Here is his bio published by AFP, on 5 March 2007. "PARIS, March 5, 2007 (AFP) - Jean Grelaud, one of France's last three surviving World War I veterans, died last month at the age of 108, his friends and family said Monday. Grelaud, who had always been reticent to talk about the devastating conflict, died on February 25 after asking that his passing be kept secret for several days by his family. Born on October 26, 1898, he joined the infantry in 1917 and saw fierce action almost immediately in the disatrous Second Battle of the Aisne. The following year he was captured during the Second Battle of the Marne -- the last major German offensive on the Western Front -- before escaping to Belgium. He also saw action in World War II. Only two "poilus" -- as World War I veterans are known in France -- still survive, both aged 109. In 2005 Chirac promised that the last to die would receive a state homage. Some 8.5 million French soldiers fought in the 1914-1918 conflict, of whom some 1.38 million died in action. Copyright AFP" Ch. -
William, Will do it for sure... So that the mystery ends... Cheers. Ch.

Soviet Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz
Christophe replied to Christophe's topic in Russia: Soviet: Other Militaria
To all, 2 points : 1. Please, try to avoid Wikipedia question. Before you post your question, an easy check with Wikipedia will let you know if the answer is not to be (too much ) easily found with the help of it. If we want the quiz to be really challenging, we have to search a little bit more than just typing the key words... 2. Please, keep to the Soviet / Cold War period. Even if I don't reject questions on Imperial Russia or the post 1991 period, let's stick to the 1917-1991 period, as it is the primary goal of the Quiz. To all, again, many thanks for your participation and enthousiasm!!!!! Frank, it is now your turn!!! Cheers. Ch. -

Christophe replied to Bryan's topic in Russia: Soviet: Other Militaria
Bryan, These are nicely made. But, for the first one (the one taken from the Duma), I'm not sure we could have this, perspective. The Palace of Soviet, in my opinion, shouldn't be visible like this from there... Cheers. Ch. -
Jan, It has been awarded to General G?nter Giel, Chief of the VP and Deputy Minister of the Interior (DDR). Cheers. Ch.

I hope... Cheers. Ch.

OK. Thansk for taking time, Ed. I will keep you informed of the nature of this document, when I have received it. Cheers. Ch.

Thanks William. But, I'm afraid it is difficult to tell which medal without seeing the other pages... And the number is the one of teh doc, not the one of the medal... Am I correct ? Cheers. Ch.
-
Hi Jan, Yes there seem to be other pages. But these pics are the only two I have. Do you think it is not possible to ID this document only with the pics I have posted ? If yes, I will have to wait for the doc to arrive... Ch.

I've tried to find information thoughout the Forum, but am not sure about it... So, I ask the experts of the Forum, who will have the right answer, I'm sure. I'm totally novice with mongolian awards... This Mongolian doc has been awarded to General-Major Giel (DDR). It is part of a splitted group. The doc is without the medal / order, so I really don't know what it is relating to. What is this document ? Many thanks in advance. Cheers. Ch.
