    1. Hi Chris Thanks for these research inputs. Valuable stuff indeed. If you come across South African recipients of the 1914 Star during your research please forward their names to me. According to what I could dig up so far only seven South Africans received this medal. I have traced five of the seven, with a six name yet to be confirmed. I posted it as a topic bout two years ago on this forum. Norman
    2. Afternoon Everybody An update on what I could find Henry William Gilbert was born 5 Dec 1880 in Debtford, London?(to be confrmed) and served on HMS Doris during the Anglo-Boer War. He was awarded the QSA with the Cape Colony Clasp and was one of only 20 Royal Navy personnel to be awarded the Kings South Africa Medal for service ashore in the Cape. His service number in the Royal Navy was 190549? (to be confirmed) and he served as a qualified signalman. I'm struggling to trace his date of birth, parents names etc. This will help me go beyond the 4th generation down in history of my family. Any help welcome. Regards Norman
    3. Hi Brian You have them quite right except C= Coloured but your explanation is correct. You also get M= Malay which is closer to the Indians. Regards Norman

    9. Morning Mervyn and Neville Luckily for me, my book deals with a seperate medal. Neville thanks for the follow-up information you provided on the NCC medals. This is why I enjoy this forum - Always something new to discuss, ponder or learn. Regards Norman
    10. Morning Neville Welcome to the forum. Your medal is something totally new to me. I did not even know of it's existance. According to me the medal was not part of the award range of the SADF and SANDF. The award is an organisational one. Recognition wise, no if you look at the table and order of precedence of South African Awards. Still very interesting. Regards Norman
    11. Morning Will Don't you want to adopt me as a son? Then I can inherit the treasure chest one day. :P:lol: Regards Norman

    13. Hi all During my December break I was fortunate to meet the son of one of South Africa's WWII heroes. He told me his dad's story and showed me the original citation for the award of the medal to his farther. Also saw the photo of Sgt Ball receiving his George Medal in 1947 from the king. I don't know how and why the medal was not kept in the family. The son asked me if I can help him trace the medal. He just wants to know the medal's whereabouts to give him some peace of mind. Any help will be appreciated. Regards Norman
    14. Morning Emmanuel Are copies of the book still freely available? What is the price? Seems that it can be a must have reference work if one is interested in African orders, decorations and medals. Regards Norman
