    1. Hi Chris Must say it is the oddest "wings" I've seen. I'm more used to the traditional design which have wings spread out, not folded or hidden. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. Regards Norman
    2. Hi Arthur Thank you very much for that input. Much appreciated. Regards Norman :D
    3. Morning Gentlemen I am looking for information pertaining to the service of one Henry William Gilbert. He was my great grandfather. What makes things difficult to trace his history, especially his early year, was because he was orphaned at a young age. He was born in the UK in 1881 or 1883 (Surrey ?). Apparently he went to a naval college in London. He joined up for the second Anglo-Boer War and reached South Africa with the forces of Lord Kitchener (Not entirely sure). I have no further information of his service during the said war. Would love to know which medals he received. After the war he stayed on in Cape Town, South Africa and married in 1905. For the 1st World War, his BWM is still in the family's possession but no other medal. This may be his only WW1 medal as he was working as the Chief Signaller of one of the lighthouses in Cape Town (maybe also during the war period). Not sure if he served in the GSWA campaign. I need plenty of information, but especially the early years (before and during the Anglo-Boer War) to find clues to follow up on with regard to his life story. Elders in family have all passed away, thus no clear concise history available. Any bits and pieces will be helpful and greatly appreciated. Regards Norman
    4. And another one ....... Unit unknown (for now) Regards Norman
    5. Morning all Found images of more shoulder flashes of the Transkei Defence Force to add to those already posted. This one i am not sure to which unit it belonged. My guess is the TDF 1st Batallion. Regards Norman
    6. Afternoon Gentlemen Thank you for your inputs. Arthur thank for the images you posted of the order. That is another puzzle solved for me. Much Appreciated. Regards Norman :jumping:
    7. Afternoon all I found images of the Bophuthatswana Order of the Leopard (Not sure?). This is the first time I come across the name of this order. I presume it was one of Bophuthatswana's National Orders as it is not part of the orders and decorations of the Bophuthatswana Defence Force of which I have a little knowledge. The images posted here looks similar to the Defence Force Merit Decoration so it might be a case of mistaken identity. If anybody can help with information on the order of the leopard as well as with images of the order I will appreciate it. Regards Norman
    8. Bophuthatswana Distinguished Gallantry Cross Refer to posts nr 5 and 16. I have found beautiful images of the abovementioned decoration. To my knowledge the gallantry cross was awarded only six times to members of the Bophuthatswana Defence Force during its existence. Interestingly the decoration in the images beares the nr 7. Not sure if it was awarded and if so to whom. Regards Norman
    9. Hi Chris Would not be surprised if they were manufactured in South Africa. The movement was after all sponsored by the Rhodies and South Africa in those days. Regards Norman
    10. This one belonged to the Transkei Defence Force's Equestrian Centre. Regards Norman
    11. Thought I will share these. Shoulder Flashes are also a popular collection subject in our parts of the world and to many an alternative to medal collecting as these items are not as expensive. I stumbled across two flashes belonging to the Transkei Special Forces. I unfortunitely have no idea which belong to what time in Transkeian history or if different units wore the different flashes. The second flash was called the Sword of the Nation Flash, alledgedly belonging to special forces as well. Regards Norman
    12. Found the following military badges pertaining to Mozambique. Both badges are from Renamo. Renamo was the rebel group opposing Frelimo after independance from Portugal in the 1970's until early in the 1990's. This is the first time I stumble accross badges from Renamo. If other members have more information or images from other badges belonging to Renamo, please share. Hope all enjoy these rare items. The images are the following: Cap Badge - Renamo and Para Wings - Renamo. Regards Norman
    13. Brett Almost forgot. There is a Owen's Korea roll for sale on Colin's online militaria site. The address is www.southafricanmilitaria.com. If the adress does not work just google south african militaria. The price if i remember correct was $25.00, not sure what the R price will be. Regards Norman
    14. I agree. It will be a real shame if that group was broken up into smaller and single pieces. That would be a sin to put it mildly. Regards Norman
    15. Morning Brett What a photo. Imagine 22 medals. Not many soldiers achieve this. Chris is right, I would also have loved to see all the full size medals mounted and worn. Thank you for sharing. Regards Norman
    16. Can see why you could not resist. Nice item. Regards Norman

    22. Good day All. Found this image of the Angolan Commandos (Special Forces) Insignia. Thought it worthwhile to share. Enjoy Norman
    23. Hi Colin The first time I see naming on a miniature. It is not the norm to do that here in South Africa. Guess it was privately done. Interesting combination though. Keep well Norman
    24. Thanks for the pointer Ed. Regards Norman
    25. Emmanuel thank you for posting the images. At least we can get an idea of which awards the Mozambicans have. These items go beyond scarce. They are mysteries. While travelling in the country I never even saw a soldier wearing any ribbons, let alone medals. Have a great day. Norman
