Excellent opportunity for "quality check" of Trost info The Emperor approval (for red cross society awards) was indeed received in April 1887, but the edict (that established these medals) was published only on June 21, 1888. Official statute says nothing about 1st and 2nd class medals. There are simply two types of medals Merit medal/Yuko [a.k.a. Japanese Red Cross Order] (only one class until 1956) Membership Medal/Sha-in [a.k.a. Japanese Red Cross Medal] (three classes full member/special---/honorary --- until 1956) The description "The medal of silver with a flying bird (Hoo) over the red cross surrounded Paulownia and Bamboo branches. Red ribbon with two blue outer stripes on each end and a blue rosette" is the general description of Membership Medal/Sha-in. Merit medal/Yuko has different design (but the same ribbon). I am afraid they weren't. To wear a foreign decoration you should get a permission first (the usual time gap between original doc and japanese permission to wear it is 4-6 months). Who wouldn't? :whistle:
