It would probably be hard to really prove anything, and I'm sure the authorities there have more important things to deal with. If the money values were high, could be another story though. Would be interesting to know just how much money this chump has scammed from sellers. Hopefully, he will rot in hell on day.

Here ya go! With the rest of the "family" of photos in the backgorund there. More than 3 years after the fact, but my memory isn't terrible. I thought those pics. in the auction looked awfully familiar. I'll just take it as a compliment..... Is it so hard for a simple, "Hey, I like your pics from a medal I bought. I want to sell the medal, can I reuse your images?" I wouldn't mind, but this is kind of insulting.

This is a fascinating thread. I do wonder though, why would anybody go to the length of making a fake a lower class order - I think unofficial copy would probably be better. As Rich pointed out, they are expensive - so it makes sense a shop might make these and somebody would be able to pick one up for a lot less money? Though I must ask, is this even LEGAL in Japan? I can't comment on the pieces - I know nothing of miniatures, but interesting to read the commentary back and forth.

Does anybody know who the original recipient of the piece was? Were documents issued for the Supreme Order as they were for other orders? If so, must be UBER-rare!

That's my guess too. Something about that particular enamel and something in the environment - perhaps extremes in temp. and humidity, and that cycle occurring for years???

Case or no case? Pictures? When I was paying attention more to sales and prices, these would fetch between $100-$200 with a case. Depends on condition, etc., earlier medals seem to be be worth more than post-war medals.

Yep! But third one's a charm..... Don't have a document for the census medal though, even more rare and more expensive as you know! Here is my uncased Korean Census medal - eBay BIN - $35.00 - poor seller thought it was the Japanese Census medal - pays to know the kanji! Lucky find, and the timing was right. Not the best condition, but $35.00? Yeah, it was worth that!! I think I've told this story before, maybe posted the pics. too, but here they are (maybe) again.... This is just a place holder until I find cased #3 though, then I'l part with this one, unless I can find an empty case!

Yeah, could swear this had been posted somewhere about a period of time where there was doubling-up of rosettes - where as in your example the 6-ray rosette was indeed used for both the 5th and 6th class awards. Damn, where is that post, I know it's here somewhere!

Yeah, isn't there something posted here sometime ago about the dates and such for rosette styles, etc. Maybe that was on Wermacht from Nick Komiya? Or is my elder mind just messing with me?
