    1. Now, to compare the small and large fonts of the Schwerin badge with this example. The two on the left are from the two known fonts used by Schwerin, the one on the right from the badge just posted. They do not match, however, this does not necessarily mean it is not Schwerin of course. Just another element of the discussion. John
    2. George Stimson just posted this badge on WAF, marked. Trying to get a closeup of the makers mark. John
    3. That is an image I have. I was hoping to find another photo of this individual. Thanks for the information though, John
    4. I do not agree that this badge is an unmarked Schwerin. The possiblility exists that the "long pin" unmarked tombak U-boat badge, recognized also by the silvered looking pin and upside down hinge, was actually made by Steinhauer. This is based on the drawings in the Steinhauer catalog that look like the Schwerin obverse but has the long round tail sticking down below the wreath. It is circumstantial, but no Steinhauer U-boat badge has appeared, and, it might be because we have labled this unmarked varient a Schwerin. The other Schwerins that are unmarked have the normal Schwerin reverse hardware; so you should remember in any case that there are two unmarked tombak Schwerin type tombak U-boat badges in addition to the marked ones., meaning two different catches, wire and flat. John
    5. Just so you know, this is how a period badge by this maker should appear. Remember, it came in a flat back and dished back version.
    6. I agree with the above posts, please do not buy this badge, although it looks OK, without a reverse shot and better images. John
    7. My photo attached. It is around 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches. Writing on the back, apparently was in a frame at one time. John
    8. Does anyone have photos of Lt. General Herr Max Schindler, born 11/12/80. RK, War Merit Cross, at one time Chief Medical Officer in Wilhelm Gustloff. Thanks, John
    9. Does anyone have photos of General Major Herr Otto Richter? He was an Engineer Officer, DKIS, born 26/12/93. Thanks, John
    10. This is the Captain of Stier, I am not sure we can see him in the photo though. Based on the decorations in the photos, the one I circled might be him. Opinions? John
    11. WWI stern gun from Hopkins sinking Stier. It was the maiden voyage for Hopkins and the German crew insisted that it was an auxiliary cruiser only finding out when they returned to Germany that it was just a Liberty Ship. John
    12. I would note that the group of officers are about the right number for the survivors of Stier. The Doctor was killed in the action with the US Liberty Ship which sank her though. John
    13. This photo is of crewmembers, or some of the crewmembers, of Stier. I do not know if the ship behind is the one that rescued them, Tannefels, Stier, or another vessel. I have tried to compare the side of the ship behind the group to both Stier and Tannenfels, and I can't really make a connection. Maybe Tannenfels after a lot of modifications. John
    14. Does anybody have a photo of the Blockade Runner TANNENFELS? Thanks, John
    15. Giorgio, My tilt to Zimmerman was on the assumption that all 4 arms of the swaz were cutout. I am not sure looking at your image if it is 4 or 3. Still, even if it is 3, they might have not cutout the 4th (top) leg for support due to the new material. No mater what it is a guess on this particular example. There seems to be no reason, if I am reading your question correctly, that the same die could not be used for the tombak and zinc although the reverse setups would have to be different. John
    16. Well, you did not address your query to the forum, but let me throw in my opinion. I do not know if we have seen this badge before but it does look period. If I may venture a guess--I would exclude L/56 since even in zinc, it had a die flaw. I also would exclude Mayer in zinc since we know what that looks like. Based on the segmented swaz, then if we had to associate it with a maker, and it is pure speculation I believe, I would go with an interesting example of a zinc Zimmerman. John
    17. Gordon, I was not aware that any MS badges were actually awarded with diamonds. John
    18. Gordon, I was not aware that any S-boat badges were actually awarded with diamonds. Same question to be repeated with the MS badge. John
