Montenegro - Silver Bravey Medal
paja replied to Daniel Cole's topic in Southern European & Balkan States
Greetings, Machine for production of medals and dies were ordered from Naples. They arrived to Cetinje in June 1841. and the production began same month. First ribbon that was used was red, blue and white. White one with red stripes on edges came to use somewhere between 1889 and 1897, most probably in 1895 when Medal of Zeal with same ribbon was introduced. There are also authors who think the change came in 1910. Information found in "Montenegrin decorations" by Milan Jovićević. -
Order of the White Eagle but with wrong box ?
paja replied to medalklector's topic in Southern European & Balkan States
Well that is just amazing! She had more decorations than many officers. Interesting to see she also had Serbian miniatures, they are pretty rare and harder to find than full size orders. Thanks for photos! We can see that apart from White Eagle with swords she was also awarded with St. Sava, looks like 4th class (Bertrand), Albanian Retreat Medal and Serbian Order of the Red Cross (that's the one next to the Legion of Honor on 3rd photo in your previous reply). Some time ago I found lists of British recipients of Serbian decorations on I think National Archives website. Copies are not very good but perhaps you can find her name there. Feel free to post her full story, of course it's allowed, I'm looking forward to that! -
Montenegro "simple" awards, Roma 1920's ?
paja replied to Igor Ostapenko's topic in Southern European & Balkan States
Unfortunately I can't find any information on those medals. The only book I have that deals with Montenegrin decorations is Milan Jovićević's "Crnogorska odlikovanja" (Montenegrin decorations) and there's nothing on them there. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for sharing those rare pieces with us! -
Order of the White Eagle but with wrong box ?

You are welcome. Markus showed us Bertrand's 4th class with swords here: http://gmic.co.uk/forums/topic/48267-serbia-order-of-the-white-eagle-with-swords/#comment-450044 There you can see how the box looks like. Notice the crossed swords on the lid. Box for "regular" White Eagle is without swords and that's the only difference between them. I forgot to mention, it's really unusual and interesting to see nurse being awarded with White Eagle with swords. Medical personal were usually awarded with Red Cross decorations, St. Sava and Charity Cross. -
Order of the White Eagle but with wrong box ?
paja replied to medalklector's topic in Southern European & Balkan States
Greetings and welcome to GMIC, I believe that you are right, box is for Order of the Star of Karađorđe with swords. Boxes for White Eagle Order are white. But you should know that "red" boxes are far more rare and thus more expensive. If it was up to me I'd keep it and try to find "white box". Order looks like 4th class but I am not sure, only difference between 4th and 5th class is that 4th is gilded. Also your White Eagle is made by Bertrand. -

St. George Medal topic Igor started reminded me of something. To be more precise question about Austrian made orders awarded during Balkan Wars/WW1. Couple of years ago I posted photos of Karađorđe Star & White Eagle both with swords. They were inherited by a relative, his grandfather was the recipient. I'll once again post photos of the White Eagle, take a closer look at it! I'm pretty sure it's Scheid's piece with added swords! Unfortunately I don't have more images, the order is framed... Notice the crudeness of the swords. There's no doubt in my mind that everything is authentic considering it was kept in family. The order was awarded in 1915 for "courage proven on the battlefield in war against Austria-Hungary"! So he was awarded with Austrian made order for courage against Austria... I am posting it in this topic because I've never seen anything like that before, there are some Rothe examples in Car's book but not one made by GAS.
