Arrived today is this transitional piece by F.W Assmann. The badge consists of a 1st pattern eagle combined with a thin early 2nd pattern wreath. These pieces are normally found unmarked due to the fact that pure 1st pattern examples were marked on the reverse of the wreath and 2nd pattern examples were marked on the reverse of the eagle? Combine a 1st pattern eagle with a 2nd pattern wreath ? no maker marks! Looking at the right-hand rivet one would think that it had been repaired, not so?Possibly down to human error; this type of rivet is relatively common and can be found throughout the ?Assmann? range.

Hi Johnny, I?m sorry that you feel we?ve let you down in regards to enquires you?ve made. I can only apologise and ask that you don?t feel too badly of us. The site is a little quieter at this time of year with our members recuperating after the festive season. I?m sure, with a little patience, your questions would have been answered or advice given on where to look. Anyway, as you say, you?ve found what your looking for, which is pleasing, and I wish you well in the any further research you may be involved in. If you feel that we can be of help in the future, please don?t hesitate in posting any enquiries. I can?t promise that we?ll always have the answers but we?ll give of our best in an attempt to help. -

Hi John, Yes, larger pictures would be a benefit in assessing the badge, but we can say that it has the characteristics of a 2nd pattern by C.E Juncker. These badges, as is the way with most TR collectables, have been copied and this is where the clear (obverse/reverse) photo?s come into play. Going on the photo supplied?. I would say that it?s okay, but let?s have a shot of the back just to make sure. -

Hi Doug, I think you'll find that the award is an Italian pilot's badge. Any documents with this group? -

A very nice group, Marc. Interesting to note that this early photograph shows Follmann wearing, what appears to be, an all silver J1. -
Hi Don, In answer to your question on the issue date of the 'Mitgliedskarte'... the only date is the one mentioned, 7th July '39. Could this be due to the owners previous books (membership being on a 3 yearly basis?) becoming full of subscription stamps and a new book being issued?? The pencilled member number would certainly suggest a replacement.

The type with the 'stepped' swastika. This particular WB came with a medal bar obtained many years ago. Nothing on the bar to suggest the recipiant was in the the 'LC' so no help there. Gordon.. A very nice badge. I must remember to look in at the sale room a little more often!

Hi Matthias As the guys say, a tripod is an important piece of kit for sharp images. The use of light is another important factor and I'm with Richard when it comes to the use of natural light. I tend to use the 'macro' function on my Nikon 8700 and resize the image on photoshop. Regarding the badge. A heavy 2nd pattern in very nice condition. The thing that interests me is that you say that it was awarded in 1938. Do you have any documentation to go with the badge to confirm the qualification date? The reason I ask is that we know that Assmann were producing their 1st pattern badges up until 1938 and it would be nice to have a more precise time frame for the introduction of the 2nd pattern, as I think the consensus is that these 2nd pattern badges came out in 39-40 and the same type continued to be used (in various metals) throughout the war. Below; Comparison between the early 1st (left) and wartime 2nd patterns.
