    1. Dear Gerd, well, as a meritorious NCO in the KGB-Border-Guards a "Medal for Distinguished Military Service, 1cl" would have been more approbriate: http://www.collectrussia.com/DISPITEM.HTM?ITEM=16601 . Motherland is usally a decoration for officers only. But, as a Cavalier of the Order of Glory + a meritorious defender of the Soviet state borders, our comrade might have got his Motherland 3cl in the 1970s, as many others of GPW-heros. Maybe our comrade promoted to an officers-rank and got his Motherland 3cl ? At least our comrade is a very rare example of an NCO, who is a full Cavalier + got a Motherland 3cl . Best regards Christian
    2. Dear Christophe, my first Soviet Medal had been "40-Years-of-Victory", which I got 1992 from my girlfriend, who bought it at a flea-market in Berlin. I actually started collecting in january 1994. I have been awarded only post-Soviet Medals from the Ukraine: - "50-Years-of-Victory" by the Military Attach? in Vienna - "Gold Medal of the Ukrainian Army" (tablemedal) by the Military Attach? in Vienna - "40-Years-Liberation of Kiev" (heavyweight tablemedal) by Lt.-Gen. Sabilyi, Military Commander of Kiev I got these medals in the mid 1990s for cultural & touristic merits towards the Ukrainian Army . Best regards Christian
    3. Gentlemanly ... Dear Jan, if you would have read the posting in this thread from another GMIC-"Club Host", Ed Haynes, you might understand, why some GMIC-members are not so happy with the behaviour of a certain person, who could identify some Cavaliers, but doesn't like to share the results with the GMIC-community. O.K., Jan, you are right, that this might not be the approbriate section at GMIC to discuss our problems in the public. Sorry .... Best regards Christian
    4. Churchill's Fulton-Speech Gentlemen, Churchill's famous speech at the 5th of march 1946 had been a reaction to Stalin's statement, he gave at a speech in Moscow in february 1946, that "world capitalism proceeds through crisis and the catastrophes of war". Well, who would say, that this statement is sooooo wrong . O.K., Stalin's pragmatic statement was nothing new for educated economists & historians - similar statements you found already in the writings of Marx, Engels, Lenin, etc. -, but it seemed approbriate to start the new "Cold War" officially. Churchill's "Iron-Curtain-Speech" http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/churchill-iron.html had been the introduction of the "Cold War"-concept in the public. Actually the "Cold War" started with the death of President Roosevelt almost one year before Fulton, in my opinion. The "Cold War" ended in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the victory of the USA. Due to that historic fact, we are able to collect Soviet Orders & Medals . Best regards Christian
    5. Dear Ed, I think, that there had been an agreement among the "Big 3" - Churchill, Roosevelt & Stalin - NOT to exchange decorations among themselves. But the next level of hierarchy got the "full load" : Montgomery & Eisenhower got their "Victories", Zhukov his GCB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Bath , etc., etc. But Churchill got his Order of the Garter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Garter , which he probably liked more, than a "Victory" . Best regards Christian
    6. Congratulations, Ivan, you have won . It is your turn to post a question. Best regards Christian BTW: Fulton & Fulton-Speech - "Iron Curtain ....".
    7. Gentlemen, no one has an idea, who that very famous person in question might be ? "Honi soit qui mal y pense." These strange words in (very old) French language have something to do with an (extraordinary!) high order our old fellow received in his late years. The "Steamship-Guy" is from the USA . Best regards Christian
    8. NEW QUESTION Due to the fact, that Simon's photograph can be found at the cover of the book about Marshall Shaposhnikov, I will be so free to post a new question for our quiz. WHO AM I ? I knew Stalin personally. I had something to do with "Honi soit qui mal y pense". I - or a famous speech of me - had something to do with that person, who invented the submarine-boat and the naval steam-ship and who you can see at that picture: Best regards Christian
    9. Shaposhnikov ? Gentlemen, I only found Marshall of the CCCP Борис Михайлович Шапошников, who had been already a Colonel in the Czarist Army before the October Revolution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Shaposhnikov Best regards Christian
    10. Dear Auke, Voroshilov did never promote to a colonel in the Czarist Army . Best regards Christian
    11. Dear Simon, sorry, sorry ..... - of course it is a Colonel of the Czarist Army . I had been too biased by the row of Marshalls of the CCCP, who had been NCOs . So, I transfered the Colonel to a Lieutenant 1st Rank ... Best regards Christian
    12. Dear Auke, this Mr. "slava1stclass" has been rather arrogant and nasty to the collectors community for years at several platforms in the www . But at least, he offers excellent items at reasonable prices at his dealer's-website . Mr. "slava1stclass" is NOT a Gentleman (at least towards people with a relation to Serbia)! Please find the source in the www, where you found your great photograph . Best regards Christian
    13. Dear Simon, Aleksandr Mikhaylovich - maybe ? But I never saw him with a moustache, but he promoted even to a Captain of the Czarist Army . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasilevsky We don't have sooooo many Marshalls of the CCCP, who had been - at least - Lieutenant 1st class of the Czarist Army . Best regards Christian
    14. Dear Andreas, dear Doc, the U-shaped ring is fixed at the wrong spot of the medal (!). The medal looks strange and I have never seen a "30-Years-Medal" with an U-shaped ring. At least the ribbon seems to be original. But, why to fake that rather cheap medal ? Best regards Christian
    15. Dear Christophe, so, there might be still some hope, that a DVD-company will release the "Fall of Berlin" with French & English language . Best regards Christian
    16. Gentlemen, such "incidents" had been rather common at the Westbalkans (Ex-Yugoslavia) in the 1990s . BTW: The KBG-chief had been the successor of comrade Brzhnev as the head of the CCCP ... Best regards Christian
    17. QUOTE(slava1stclass @ Jan 8 2007, 14:49 ) To all: I have positively identified the second Full Cavalier in Post # 1 above. I will now work to i.d. these new men (Posts # 7 and 11). Regards, slava1stclass Dear Ed, ... and To all: I think, that this posting of our "friend" Mr. "slava1stclass" is a very typical example of the way of communication our "friend" does: To share nothing to anyone . Already I am rather sure, which person hides behind "slava1stclass", but I think, it is legally (according to UK-laws) not possible to reveal his identy, his two or three nationalities, his nice dealer's-website, his academic degress, his merits in the scientific world, etc., etc. at GMIC . Ed, you know, who it might be ... Best regards Christian
    18. Dear Gerd, a truely interesting photograph . The HSU-Colonel at the left seems to have been an active pilot - fighter pilot ? -, who started his career as a sub-lieutenant (his Glory 3cl) and retired as a colonel somewhere in the 1960s. His Merit-Medal, RS & RB #2 might be long service awards for 10, 15 & 20 years in service. It should be not so difficult to find out his identity . The "Cavalier" at the right received also a Motherland 3cl (!), which is a rather rare award for GPW-NCOs. Due to his awards, it seems, that he did not promote to an officers rank. I have never read about an NCO, who got a Motherland . Best regards Christian
    19. Dear Auke, great photograph with 5 Cavaliers in 1985 - many thanks . BTW: It seems to be an interesting website, you took the photograph - you know about what is that website is exactly? Best regards Christian
    20. Dear Christophe, that's the sloppy way Soviet authorities, we specially can see with multiple RBs and with Glory 1cl . In anycase, it is a violation of statutes and regulations ... Best regards Christian
    21. Dear Christophe, your are right . I found it interesting, that the General had the same name like the well known author . I had been looking in the wrong line ... Best regards Christian
    22. Dear Doc, dear Gerd, I am not sure, if there is any connection to the Navy, because - as Gerd stated - there is no connection to a Fleet, which has to have a cyrillic "F" at the end. O.K., what do we see: - the sign of Motorized Infantry - colour black - rank: Private or Seaman - the letters "PW" in cyrillic - and the stripes for second year of studies. Maybe a mixture of Tank Forces & Infantry ? Best regards Christian
    23. Gentlemen, I also have no clue at all . Maybe our HSU got drawned among tons of potatoes in a silo ? Silos had been tatical very important points in the battle - height & solid concrete structure (Stalingrad, etc.). Best regards Christian
