    1. Hallo Mondovor Slightly off the subject of documents and Russian language, but related to fortifications. I believe a more correct description of a Pill-box is; a position with a re-enforced concrete structure, built for the enclosure of machine-guns or light artillery. A firing position covered with wood and soil is a simple bunker. Just my two kopecks Kevin in Deva.
    2. Hallo Dan, I have Part 69 of "SOLDIERS DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919,The Connaught Rangers,, book form, this however does not list any Officers, they are I believe to be found under "OFFICERS DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919. and unfortunatly I don't have that Kevin in Deva
    3. Hallo my suggestion would be (off the top of my head) How about Defence Electric Light, 2nd COMPONENT / CONTINGENT ?? Kevin in Deva.
    4. Hallo Gentlemen. While doing research for my book I discovered the following names of Connaught Rangers soldiers who died in the Great War, all the men came from Castlebar town or very nearby, I was wondering is it possible to find out more precisely where they were killed, as the term France & Flanders even covers the Italian theater. While the number of Connaught Rangers from Castlebar killed was small (17), I am sure there were many more Mayo men who died serving in other regiments. I will post the names of the other Mayo men from other Mayo towns & areas who died in the Great War while serving with the Connaught Rangers in the coming weeks. Also with regards the list it gives the battalions the men were serving with, I was under the impession that the 1st & 2nd Battalions were the main fighting units the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th were Militia recruiting Battalions. Can somebody help me understand the way they worked. It would be interesting also to know if any members hold any medals to the Connaught Rangers, specifically any to the Mayo contingent CASTLEBAR MEMBERS OF THE CONNAUGHT RANGERS KILLED IN WORLD WAR 1. 8. Hallo Gentlemen, thought I would show and share this picture, I picked it up while thumbing through a couple of hundred mixed postcards at the collectors exposition in Deva on Saturday, I nearly left it as group photos, without medals, don't really intrest me, but when I looked on the back this one was quite interesting, as it appears to list the names and some of the Regimental numbers of the group pictured, as my reading of the script is not too hot, so I will attach a shot of the rear of the card itself, for anybody who is interested. At least this group are no longer a bunch of unknowns. Kevin in Deva.
    9. Hallo Gentlemen, Just spotted these items posted on another site in Romania: http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?sh...t=0entry50951 They all look a bit suspect to me, and I am not sure but did the S.S. issue black service medals ?? Kevin in Deva.
    10. Hallo Gentlemen, over the course of the weekend (June 3rd) I located this Romanian WW1 Cross at the Collectors Exposition in Deva, it is the variant with small square pattern in the arms of the cross and a post type ribbon ring holder, it came without a ribbon but have a small spare piece to put on it. Another variation I have spotted concerning these crosses is in the design of the crowns, some have a wide space in the "cut-out" areas of the upper crown, the other type has a more narrow open space. Kevin in Deva,
    11. Hallo Mike and Peter, thank you for your replies, thats just it, the engraving is so sloppy, starting with the number which is off centre, I feel a skilled engraver would have done it much better, the first number 6 is smaller than the second number 6, to my mind even with such a long name it could have been done with Number, and Rank on the top line, and then the name underneath, just to be asthetic, I have to say quite frankly one would expect a better job, seeing its going to the Mother who has lost a son in the War, surely there would have been some kind of quality control. Just my two bobs worth. Kevin in Deva
    12. Hallo Gentlemen I spotted this on Ebay, I have always liked the design of this cross, but have a couple of questions for our Canadian members as they might be more knowledgable about the item in question. http://cgi.ebay.com/WW1-CANADIAN-MEMORIAL-...1QQcmdZViewItem Question 1, Were the crosses issued named?? Question 2, Does the engraving to the rear look good to your eyes, to mine it appears un-professionaly done, but, maybe it was done localy?? Any comments would be welcome. Kevin in Deva.
    13. Hallo Paddywhack They can be found on German Ebay, but, be careful as there are fake ones being offered in Zink with a silver paint-job, beware of the bubbly / blotched apperance, and repro ribbonsI will post some pictures of some in my possesion later tomorrow, too late tonight Kevin in Deva

    15. Here I will continue the posting of the badges with regards the belt. PARACHUTE REGIMENT CAP-BADGE, the box under the chute is one section, this badge has lugs to the rear. Varition to the earlier posted?? THE CAMERONIANS (Scottish Rifles) REGIMENT, , (there are two badges the same on the belt!!) Kevin in Deva
    16. Thanks to all the Gentlemen who have contributed answers, with regards all my the badges posted, I am first and foremost a medal collector, and the few Cap-badges I have picked up, came to me very cheap so I am not so much out of pocket, Cap-badge collecting with so many re-strikes has become a minefield With regards the Large Connaught Rangers Badge there is an mark above the "T" and under the "Quis Separabit" logo and to the right and left upper harp so its a FAKE! Mr. Peter Monaghan mentions a RNAS badge but I have not posted one I think its from earlier in the post by the topic starter, but thanks anyway. Thanks also to Brian for the images with regards the Mayo Militia badges, I will send a P.M. asap. Here I will continue the posting of the badges with regards the belt. THE CAMERONIANS (Scottish Rifles) REGIMENT, THE ROYAL SCOTS, SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS (is it my memory playing tricks or have the stags antlers been shortened?) THE RIFLE BRIGADE, AUSTRALIAN ARMY "RISING SUN" BADGE, INISKILLING COLLAR-DOG OVER A "ROYAL SCOTS" SHOULDER TITLE. Kevin in Deva
    17. THE BELT Insignia reading from left to right; R.S. ROYAL SCOTS, Unknown Grenade emblem. CAMERON HIGHLANDERS. LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT, THE KINGS ROYAL RIFLE CORPS, Red Velvet backing to denote Battalion? IRISH GUARDS Collar-Dog, MANCHESTER REGIMENT. Kevin in Deva.
    18. THE BELT BUCKLE, due to extensive wear it reads "GIBRALTER" * * * * MARE PER TERRAM." its also been fixed with the belt inverted. Kevin in Deva.
    19. THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT a.k.a The Red Berets. On the end of the chute is a box, this one appears to be divided into two sections, I have another Para-badge on the belt, this one however has a single section box on the end of the chute, anybody know why? a design variation?? Kevin in Deva.

    22. CONNAUGHT RANGERS. (Not 100% sure about the authenticity of this one, I have heard the area to the sides of the harp, and the top of the harp, should be fretted out, but I was also told its original as well, any help appreciated.) Kevin in Deva.
    23. BERKSHIRE REGIMENT. Kevin in Deva.
