    Hi Micha,

Sorry but he is not Buchholz but a friend of him who was in the same unit, may be same crew (Pedro1).

Here is a picture showing Buchholz in the middle, with the friend on left, both wearing the "Medalla Militar".

This is a very interesting thread of which I would like to ask a question: Since a German recipient of this award would have received the Spanish Cros in gold, would the reverse be true as well? In other words, would every German recipient of the Spanish Cross in gold be awarded the Militar Medal too?

    Hi,

No, around 100 Medalla Militar were awarded to german soldiers, and around 1100 spanish crosses in gold were awarded.

Were there any other Spanish awards for German participants that would automaticly merit the award of a specific grade of the Spanish Cross?

There is to my knowledge no written rule. I just observed on period pictures and individual documents that The Medalla militar was followed by gold cross, the "Cruz de guerra" by gold and silver cross. red military cross by silver cross, white military cross by silver and bronze cross.

Here is an original Legion Condor bar with a Militar Medal mounted which I have owned for quite some time. Until recently, I was not aware of the significance of this award....but this thread makes me appriciate it so much more!

On this photo, I guess Major Hertzer is photographed on left. He was commanding the Gruppe Wolm (Signals) of the Imker Gruppe. Note that he is wearing the "Medalla Militar" but also the special badge of this unit on his laft arm.

The picture was surely taken on June 3rd 1939 in D?beritz, just after the awards ceremony leaded by von Thoma and von Brauchitsch.

That guy is wearing the single eight-pointed star of a Spanish comandante (major). Therefore his German rank should be Hauptmann (captain).
