I have a theory that the Iron Cross 1939 was somehow copyrighted to prevent folks using it for things like cookbooks...

Did the NSDAP have a opyright on the swastika preventing "anyone" from just using things with a swastika to sell things like cookbooks?

Not an actual "copyright" (the Nazis weren't the US!), but "Kitsch" items with swastikas were banned early, probably in about 1934.
