Harvey Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 (edited) As I've posted elsewhere, I came across a veritable treasure trove of orders/badges/medals while perusing the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul back in August 2005. For the full picture, see the thread at http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1604...mp;#entry156158Amongst them were 7 Orders of Lenin - all of which appear to be the genuine article. I wanted to have some other expert eyes take a look and see if there's anything that doesn't match up.We'll start with two Type 5, v1: Edited March 20, 2007 by Harvey

RichieC Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 The guy was *initially* asking $850 apiece, but would've gone lower...-Dave"Going rate" here in the USA was about five to six hundred for one of these later variations in 2005. Do I recall correctly -ODM Specialists- ?
JimZ Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 All I can say is Do you mean u took the time to photograph them and did not take the time to bargain the seller down and buy them??? No - You cannot be serious!!! When I saw them on the other thread my heart already skipped a beat! And now to see the different variations as well! They're looking good but is there any chance you can post closer pics.... mebbe its the setting on my laptop that does not allow me to see them as close up as on a proper sized TFT!Jim

At the time, I had just begun learning about Soviet awards (having spent the previous 5 months in the Republic of Georgia), so I didn't really know their value and/or how to spot fakes. Since the Lenins were the only ones I really recognized, I laid them out to photograph. Then there's the money thing - I mean, I wasn't exactly walking around Istanbul with thousands of $$$ in my pocket...
JimZ Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Then there's the money thing - I mean, I wasn't exactly walking around Istanbul with thousands of $$$ in my pocket...Indeed not the safest thing to do either..... although in that same month I remember a great many Turkish soldiers at every corner holding machine guns! Perhaps they knew that "Lenin" was in town! I do remember leaving Istanbul with food poisoning and the promise to never return! However..... "Lenin" would make me think twice...although even if in the Bazaar, the seller seemed savvy enough about what he was selling!Jim
