Don't know for sure, but I think it's a lightweight model, maybe for funerals? I have a similar one and a matching EKI that is supposedly a lightweight wearer's copy.

Your interesting cross looks like it had something soldered on the reverse at the center. Perhaps there were prongs of some sort there at some point in the past?????
