Krigstrom
Does anyone know the story about this medal? It it described as "Russia 65 year defense of Moscow 1941-2006".Is it some kind of local veteran medal from moscow or some kind of pre-soviet communist medal or even a medal from the Russian federation?I have bin looking all over the internet for hours but have come up with nothing...Thanks! Christophe
Hi Krigstrom,This medal is an unofficial one, recently issued. By whom? I don't know, as it is now quite difficult to follow who is issuing what in today's Russia... It is not an Umalatova medal, and of course not an official one from the Federation of Russia. But, has this medal been issued by the town of Moscow? Who knows?Have a look at my thread (from post #4) :http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=13348You can see this medal was displayed on a number of banners downtown.Attached is a pic of the medal.Cheers.Ch. Christian Zulus
Gentlemen, well, this medal has the highly prestigeous "St.-George-Ribbon" .So, I assume, that it has to be a "legitimated" one .I also would think: Either Municipialtiy of Moscow or Ministery of Defense .Best regards Christian
Christophe
As said earlier, and because of the numerous posters, banners offically displayed in Moscow a few months ago, I would think it is issued by the Municipality of Moscow. My best bet... Ch.
Christophe
There is another Medal for the 65 Year of the Defense of Moscow, privately issued by the "Russian Awards Committee" (?).Here it is.Ch.Pic : ? Christophe ? ChR Collection

Ed_Haynes
Fascinating! While the "free market" may not have entered into all aspects of post-Soviet Russian life, it has surely taken over phaleristics, making today's Russian scene almost as bad as all those veteran-purchased "commemorative" Viagra medals that infest the US and UK. Christophe
Ed,It is really impressive to see that at each of my trips to Moscow (let's say every 2 months maximum, sometimes several a month), I discover newly issued "fantasy" medals. I have to say that some of them are not badly made at all. But, indeed, they have zero historical value...Cheers.Ch.
Christophe
Concerning the one I showed in post #6, I personally find the design really very attractive, even if the realisation (quality) of the medal is not at the same level...Ch.
