Chris Boonzaier Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I read somewhere that the French govt had exended the right to the croix de combattant to volunteers who fought in the Spanish civil war.... does anyone know of any cases of this?
Chris Boonzaier Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 By the way, I mean NOW, in the 1990`s, beginning of 2000, the govt decided that anyone who fought on the good guys side could qualify as a vet, get the carte de combattant and the medal, decades after the war was over.
Ed_Haynes Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I assume this applies to the international volunteers on the republican, democratic, non-fascist side? There were, of course, French (and other) volunteers on both sides.
Chris Boonzaier Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 Yup, thems the boys.I was reading up on the statutes as with the new ones I qualify for the cross and found that as a footnote. I wonder how many men claimed it?
Ed_Haynes Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I know it was awarded to SCW veterans, but I have always found that award IMMENSELY confusing. Someone needs to sort it out ... hint, hint ...?
Chris Boonzaier Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 Dont look at me, it took me months of exasperation to find out if I was eligible, and I still dont understand the details !!
Jacques Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Dont look at me, it took me months of exasperation to find out if I was eligible, and I still dont understand the details !!←Nowadays, to be awarded the "croix du combattant", you must have been cited for action. Participation to several "OPEX" is not sufficient .jacques
Panzerpionier Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 As far as I know, some members of the French fascist organization "Croix de Feu" fought in the Nationalist side. They joined the Spanish Foreign Legion and were allowed to wear the French colors on his Spanish uniforms.Perhaps the Vichy government created an award for those anti-communist fighters.Best regards
Veteran Posted October 22, 2011 Posted October 22, 2011 Hello Panzerpioner To my knowledge, there was no such nonsense in the 1940-44 period. The Spanish Civil War was much too close for any of that. Regards
