    Ribbons/Medals bars

I observed on period pics and on original ribbons/Medal bars that they are sometimes mounted in the wrong order, against I suppose, german regulations.

Foreign orders are generally mounted after the national medals, at the end, chronologically.

Moreover, the spanish medals such as "Medalla de la campa?a, Medalla Militar, Cruz roja , cruz blanca" were not delivered with swords, nevertheless, germans used to wear them with swords on the ribbons of their ribbons bar or medals bar.

The Germans always had problems with what to do with foreign awards. The same mismounting precedence often occurred with WW1 awards such as the Hungarian and Bulgarian WW1 Commemorative Medals being incorrectly mounted next to Hindenburg Crosses before other German awards.

    These are typical period mistakes.

Maybe these fellows just felt a "decoration" should precede a Long Service Medal...... regs be damned??? Who knows why this happens, but there's no shortage of (obviously) period bars (both medal & ribbon) with a plethora of errors on them!

How about even the fact the owner could have been a spanish volunteer or of foreign descent from way back..? Nationalist pride etc.

Just plain wrong order works as well of course ;) In many ways it seems that the regulations were so confusing at different times!

the regulations were not confusing, but not always strictly applied !

Jacques is absolutely right. FOREIGN awards always seemed to confuse German recipients, although the rules and regulations were always absolutely clear:

all such foreign awards after German awards, unchanging since Imperial regulations were in force.

The "intrepretation" problem was when an individual wearer decided that since HE was German, that made his "foreign" awards "German" too. :cheeky: This often happened with the ex-Central Powers' WW1 Commemorative Medals earlier.

The last two medals that can be seen clearly on the bar, at top left are Romainian Royal Medals:

Barbatie si Credenti / Manhood and Loyalty.

and the Crusade Against Communisum Medal 1941.

Both were freely awarded to the German Forces by the Romanians, well up untill 1944 anyways ;)
