Guest Darrell Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Is this an early '57 EK1? Seems ... well ... seems rather "different".
joe campbell Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 darrell-while this has better finish than mine, thecatch and the hinge remind me more ofmore contemporary pieces i've seen. i am NOexpert on these, but i am going to fall in the"not so early" camp.joe
Guest Darrell Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 Hi Joe ... I've seen that little circle on EKs before ... almost like a mark for a ring for a second class
Dave Danner Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Interestingly, my 57er EK1 also has that little ring, but on the bottom arm. I assume that it was part of the die (a ring/depression from the pin used to knock the cross out of the mold). My EK2 also has the ring, and again on the lower cross arm:
Guest Darrell Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Interesting. I know S&L used a little circle as an identifying mark so to speak ... I wonder if that what these are?
joe campbell Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 and to see the circle in different positionson the cross!any other opinions on the age of the postedcross?is there any resource that discusses the "dating"(no rick... not THAT kind of dating....) of the '57ers?thanks!joe
Dave B Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Darrell I would say the cross is late rather than early mate, although it's better made than the rubbish they still churn out now for the collectors. The frames could either be for an EK1 or EK2,the small circle is the eyelet posistion indicator if the cross was to become an EK2.(this is what I have always believed)Dave, why your EK2 has the ring affixed yet still has the circle mark is beyond me but more than likely is just sloppy workmanship.CheersDave
Tony Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I agree with Dave as the small indentation is always (as far as I know) found on later crosses. Is the core magnetic?Joe, who can beat that lovely cross of yours? Tony
Guest Darrell Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Maybe I'll see if the seller has more pictures or more information. This is an interesting item for sure.
joe campbell Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 tony-it's nestled into its current home with the rest of the gang!my compliments.joe
