Does anyone know who this man was?

Hello,

he looks like a Non-Commissioned Officer from an assault troop unit (Sturmtrupp), decorated with two Tapferkeitsmedaillen (1st and 2nd Class in silver) and the Karl-Truppenkreuz.

It could also be that the first medal is a Bravery Medal in Gold (Goldene Tapferkeitsmedaille).

Notice on his left sleeve he has the blue embroidered initials B.F. either side of a mountain axe. He was a Bergf?hrer (Mountain Guide) as well as being a member of an assault party.

This a well-known (and very cool) photo. I have a copy of it myself. Not much to the sleeve insignia. I believe the insignia was applied to the sleeve in pieces, that is, it was not on a patch.
