Elmar Lang Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Hello,he looks like a Non-Commissioned Officer from an assault troop unit (Sturmtrupp), decorated with two Tapferkeitsmedaillen (1st and 2nd Class in silver) and the Karl-Truppenkreuz.It could also be that the first medal is a Bravery Medal in Gold (Goldene Tapferkeitsmedaille).Best wishes,Elmar Lang
Ian Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Notice on his left sleeve he has the blue embroidered initials B.F. either side of a mountain axe. He was a Bergf?hrer (Mountain Guide) as well as being a member of an assault party. Regrads,Ian

Chip Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Charles,This a well-known (and very cool) photo. I have a copy of it myself. Not much to the sleeve insignia. I believe the insignia was applied to the sleeve in pieces, that is, it was not on a patch.
