Tom Y Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I use Boshield T-9 applied with a Q-tip. Just be careful to keep it off the ribbon.
Eric Stahlhut Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I use Boshield T-9 applied with a Q-tip. Just be careful to keep it off the ribbon.and it's ok with all of the different types of laquer, paint, blueing agents, etc. applied to the core?
Tom Y Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 (edited) Ayup. Was turned onto it by someone in a forum long ago and far away. Been using it ever since with nary a problem. Flows into the cracks and dries....dry. I use it on guns, knives & swords, tools, bike chains, and anything else metal that needs protection and lubrication.I imagine you have the same problem with humidity on the Left Coast I do here in the swamp. A dab of Boshield, problem solved. Edited July 8, 2008 by Tom Y
Eric Stahlhut Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 thanks tom! i will get some of this boeing product and put it to good use...i recently discovered that 20-30 eks i had in storage suffered varying degrees of damage thanks to a malfunctioning sprinkler system...basically one riker board...just glad it wasn't ALL of them.cheers!

Bryan Poon Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 Hi TomThank you very much. I will try to get one.CheersBryan
DavidM Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 HelloI see that the website Tom directed us to doesn't sell this outside of the USA. Is this anything like WD40? Or do any UK members know if this Boshield T-9 or an equivalent is available over here? Thanks
Eric Stahlhut Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 david, perhaps you could ask for the product (or a comparable substance) at a local motorcycle parts shop or a marine repair shop. i think i once read that the application of WD40 on crosses is a bad idea--it doesn't dry, and can damage the finish (or remaining finish) on a core.
Tom Y Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Is this anything like WD40?Unequivocally NO WD40 is a kerosene based product which loosens rust , never dries, and most important, deteriorates paint. You don't want to loosen or remove rust, just stabilize it.Bicycle shops sell a chain lube that is very similar to T-9.
DavidM Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 HelloTom, Eric, thanks for the advice and information. I'll see what my local bike shop has in store - and no, I've never used WD40 on anything in my collection.
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 hiya, kids!i finally got ahold of some Boshield. it's time for me to experiment, and i figured it would be nice to have a visual aid for this thread.here is the subject: a L59-marked 1939 EK1--before the unfortunate incident, the core was blued, if i remember correctly...
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 markings on reverseanyways, let's see what happens! be back in a few...
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 one more 'before' shot before i douse it...
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 ..and here is how cross looks a few minutes later after the initial applicationa little better, no?
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 i will let this cross dry, remove the coating with mineral spirits, and then repeat the process--just to see what happens.remember-this is an experiment!
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 here's a blued-core 1914 i have begun working on. first result is better
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 as tom mentions, the idea is to stabilize and preserve the cross-not to totally remove the rust. but with several applications one can improve the overall condition.i plan on working on this zimmerman next.
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 first four after initial treatment. anyways, i'm satisfied with Boshield T9. it doesn't have super-restorative powers, but every little bit helps!cheers, everyone (gotta get back to work)!
