sabrigade
This is a rare photograph taken in the Mitry's Photo studio in Cairo. It shows the Sheikh wearing an impressive array of Orders and Medals from the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Britain and also possibly the Sudan.

Ulsterman
Khartoum Star?! As in Gordon's medal? Who was this man and what was his career/life? This is a fascinating photograph.
Ed_Haynes
Khartoum Star?! As in Gordon's medal? That is what it looks like to me. Maybe I'm wrong. Been known to happen.
sabrigade
I agree with Ed's opinion on the General Gordon's Star for the Siege of Khartoum as I have an example of one in my collection. I am also inclined to think that the Sheikh was awarded the Queen's Sudan Medal. I have not yet managed to make a break through in researching individual personalities in the Sudan. I intend to visit the history department at the University of Khartoum and see if they can be of assistance.

Sudanese
The latter three medals (from left to right) are defintely the Khedive's Star, (1882-86) Khedive's Sudan and Egypt Medal (1882-1884)He is probably from the Shaigiya tribe as they were the only pro-government tribe left in the Sudan after the Mahdi captured Khartoum in 1885. I can do a trace on which section of the tribe through my relations back home if the name is accurate. Nice photo!

I was given the photograph by a dealer in the Omdurman Souk and he provided the name. I am currently in Khartoum.

Ulsterman
This is very exciting!! Welcome Sudanese!! Did the tribe offer allied auxiliary warriors to the Khedives'/British forces against the Mahdi?
