He would have been close to 50(49) by the end of the war. Hopefully he was a "paper cop" by that time! Great find Gordon!

What is really odd is that he had no affiliation with civil police duty whatsoever!

His occupation when he was finally called up as an overage draftee for his initial cavbalry service, his occupation is listed as "Haussohn."

"House son" is nothing I find any reference for!

I think it means he lives at home and the wife works.

I am also interested by the "rank" of Gendarm Stellvertreter. Was this an official Gerndarmerie rank or just a temporary assignment, similar to being made a temporary deputy?

Nice document, by the way.

    Hi,

let us talk (write) about the "Haussohn".

"I think it means he lives at home and the wife works"

    Definitely not!

    See page 1 (Post3):

    4. Ob verheirathet: ./. (./. is the first entry 1891 = not married)

Kinder: ./. (that is the first entry 1891 = no children)

At that time, 2. Oktober 1891, he was 22 years old (born 19. September 1869), and he lived in the house of his parents.

And as a "Haussohn" he was still under control of his parents/his father:

    http://www.zeno.org/Pierer-1857/A/Haussohn+u.+Haustochter

"Haussohn u. Haustochter (Filius u. Filia familias), Kinder, welche noch unter v?terlicher Gewalt befindlich sind."

He had to have the permission of his father to become a soldier!

    Regards

    Uwe
