Is that the 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal (long text on reverse) or the 1911 issue (with "1905" shield)?

There is only one possible match from the non-Bavarian awards to Bavarians roll BUT-- why on Earth is he NOT wearing his Bavarian XXIV Years Service Cross?????

Served in Bavarian Eisenbahn and Telegraph units. When the war started, Verkehrsoffizier von Platz Germersheim. The Honor Rank List shows him as Chief of Staff of the Chief of Field Transportation Branch. (Feldkraftfahrwesen).

the VERY odd Schwarzburg awarde gazetted in the Personal Nachrichten 05.12.17

No listing for the Bremen, Brunswick, or Oldenburg Crosses, but that's typical of the odds of having these gazetted-- he might also have received all three in 1918 after they stopped being gazetted on 31.12.17.

But he should have received his XXIV during the war. Weird to omit that!!!!!!!

Is that the 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal (long text on reverse) or the 1911 issue (with "1905" shield)?

Forgive my question, but what were these two medals given for? What's the difference (besides reverse appearance) between the two medals? How were they awarded?

The 1905 was given to all Bavarian officers (including retired ones) living on that anniversary date, to Kapitulant enlisted ranks beyond their first term of mandatory service, and to old 1870 valor award holders.

The 1911 was for officers and Kapitulants who had not been eligible (or serving) in 1905 AND was extended to "Bavarian nationals" of all ranks in the Imperial navy and Schutztruppen. Prussian Rank Lists show the 1911 jubilee medal as if it was a decoration!

There were also specialized versions of the same medal on the same ribbon in 1909 and 1911 only those were suspended from dated scrolls under crowns-- THOSE went to veterans and serving members of specific units, and replaced 1905 medals previously earned. They are much rarer than the general issues of 1905 and 1911.

As a quirk, the 1905 military medal has a long text on back, while the "1911" medal has a crowned shield reverse with date 1905-- because the MILITARY 1911 is simply the 1905 CIVIL jubilee medal (red ribbon) on the military ribbon (green edges). :rolleyes:

OK! Now that makes sense. I have a 3-medal bar; Bav. 3rd Klass MVK mS mK, EKII, 1911 Luitpold Jubilee Medal (on the reverse the 1905 date, shield, on red ribbon w/green edges). What was perplexing was that it is suppose to be owned by guy born in 1891. That would make him 14 in 1905. Couldn't of earn it unless he was royalty -he was not. But 1911 as a 20 year old, presumably in the service -OK.
