Which Medal?

Hi,

this pic was taken in Pretoria, I assume just before the Boer war?

I am not sure what medal it could be?

Is this the British North Borneo Company medal?

Could also be the South Africa Medal 1877-79, which seems more likely if the wearer was photographed in Pretoria in the 1890s. The suspender and the clasp designs are similar for both medals. And perhaps it's a trick of the light, but the small section of ribbon below the clasp seems to have some dark patches towards each edge, which would fit the pattern of the SA Medal ribbon. The BNBC Medal ribbon is light-coloured with a dark centre stripe, the 'punitive expeditions' ribbon being dark with two light-coloured bands.

possible I suppose... I thought of it as 3 equal stripes...

I can't make out much apart from the shape suspension or clasp. IGS 1854 - 1895, or 1895 - 1902? Or if the photo is a year or 2 younger, The IGS 1908 - 35, or Tibet Medal 1903 - 04?

For some completely unknown reason it just hit me as South Africa Medal 1877-79 when I saw the photo, so I would also go for that

Edit having digitally altered the contrast and brightness, I would have expected some slight indication of the dark stripes to appear, however none, so I'm none the wiser at the moment
