The two Lance Corporals earned the medals on 23 July 2008 while serving in Afghanistan. A Piranha mortar carrier with an open ramp was hit by an AT shell from behind. At impact, the right hand side fuel tank comes off and the vehicle instantly catches fire.

Lance Corporal Lasse Rasmussen and then-Private Kenneth Skovmand Pedersen immediately runs into the burning vehicle where they find a colleague under some ammunition boxes. They remove the boxes and bring their colleague to safety just a few meters outside of the vehicle.

Few seconds later, the ammunition inside the vehicle starts to go off.

The Chief of Defence explains the motivation for awarding the medals to

Thanks for the information, Kevin ! Very nice medal too ... it's good to see Denmark still values such awards and opted for a nicely designed one of good quality. Some other countries seem to award "modern" medals of far less quality.

    Cheers,

    Hendrik
