Mervyn Mitton
Where better to bring a coin enquiry , then to a sub-forum such as this ! I bought this and the following 6d. pieces a while ago.Dated 1892 the 5/- piece is for the ZAR - Zuid Afrikaans Republic - the other side in the Boer War. There is a blob of silver solder on the base,on each side - must have been mounted. It is about the size of a British 5/-I will be most grateful for any info, possible value and does the silver blob affect price very much?

Mervyn Mitton
Same questions - just no solder. I did ask a jeweller if it could be removed - he said it was silver solder and to remove would damage the silver in the coin.
paul wood
Same questions - just no solder. I did ask a jeweller if it could be removed - he said it was silver solder and to remove would damage the silver in the coin.Oddly enough ZAR coins are more common in the UK than in South Africa as many were bought home by British troops as souvenirs. some are defaced by engraving hat and pipe in Krugers mouth and many of the gold ponds and half-ponds were mounted as watch fobs. The sixpences are relatively common and are worth in the condition yours are in about ?5, the 5 shillings unfortunately has been devalued by the solder mark, undamaged it would be ?100 in the condition your piece is damaged thus perhaps ?20-30. Hope this is of help.Paul

Mervyn Mitton
You have good eyes - I hadn't noticed the little blob at the top. You are probably right that it was turned into a brooch. They had a nasty habit of taking suspenders off medals and doing the same. I suppose if they earned it, they have the right to do what they want !
