PKeating Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 (edited) Instituted on 22.7.1909 for the pacification of Morocco, these medals were struck in silver - some sources state silver-plated bronze but mine all bear silver marks - and issued with four clasps in the 'oriental' style: CASABLANCA, OUDJA, MAROC and HAUT-GUIR. No awards were made after 20.7.1912. As you can see, one of the medals has been replaced by a civil service medal to one F Douley in 1952, perhaps by the veteran himself, reasoning after losing the medallion part that one medal obverse bearing the Marianne was much like another. Ulsterman Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Tres bon!Can you tell us perchance what the different clasps were awarded for? What sorts of troops got these?I know almost nothing about Frances' Moroccan exploits.
TacHel Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 The CASABLANCA clasp was awarded to sailors and soldiers who sailed to that city between 5 August 1907 and 15 June 1909.The OUDJDA clasp was awarded for operations there between 29 March 1907 and 1 January 1909.The HAUT-GUIR clasp was awarded for operations in that area between 6 March and 10 June 1908.The MAROC clasp was awarded for operations (mostly service in country) after 20 July 1912. Date at which the "protectorate treaty" was signed. The medal could be awarded to sailors, soldiers, indigenous personnel, civil servants and to personnel of the societies bringing help to the wounded, who took part in pacification operations or in territorial defense.

Two decrees (15 May 1912 & 4 June 1913) extended retroactively the clasp award to all operations in Morocco after 1909.La M?daille Nationale Comm?morative des Op?rations effectu?es au Maroc (it is the official full name) has not been awarded after the 20 July 1912 (date of the ratification of the protectorate treaty of the 30 March 1912).However, the "M?daille Coloniale" with a clasp "MAROC", "MAROC 1925", "1925 MAROC 1926" was awarded in place of this medal for the pacification operations (and not just for service in the country) which continued after the protectorate treaty.Around 63,200 medals were awarded between 1909 and 1912.RegardsBisonReference : "Ordres et D?corations de l'Empire Ch?rifien au temps du Protectorat fran?ais au Maroc" Pierre ROUSSEAU, M?moire & Documents, 2005. Chris Boonzaier Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Amazon.com for Douglas Porch's "The conquest of Morocco"Read it and you to will want to own one of these medals.A fantastic, historical, bloodthirsty, informative narration... for me it was a MUST and kick started my interest in Morocco.
