Paul C Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 My Grandfather came to the USA around 1911. They story I was told was that the police were after him for helping poor people. What that means I don't know but I was also told that my Grandfather hated the Czar, so I guess it had something to do with the Soviets. He left behind in the Ukraine 2 brother and 2 sisters. His older brother went off to fight for the revolution and I do not have much information about him, just a picture. After the German invation in 1941 my great Uncle served in the Red Army from July 1941 to November 1945. His son joined the Red Army November 1943. My family was from a small village in the Northern Ukraine direct east of Kursk. I would estimate about 100-200 miles east. It wasn't until about 20 years ago that I know anything about my family in the Ukraine. My Uncle re-established contact which had been broken in the late 1920's. It was only recently that I found out I could get research done about my family in the Red Army. I was able to obtain a copy of their award cards and citation. My greatuncle was awarded the Medal for Bravery and his son was awarded the Red Star, Medal for Combat Service and the Victory over Germany. Below is posted the award cards, citations and translations.

JimZ Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Pavel Efimovich's story brought a smile to my face. You never know what research will turn up!! But in this case its just lovely to be able to get to the story of people who are related to you. Well done.
