webr55
I just learnt that the famous painter Franz Marc (of the artist circle "Der Blaue Reiter") was KIA as an (apparently Bavarian) officer on 4th March 1916 near Verdun (born 1880). I have a source that says he was promoted to Leutnant der Landwehr on 13th October 1915, most probably in a Bavarian Artillery Regiment. Are there any other sources to back up this info? Thanks Chris
Guest Rick Research
His commission date would have been published in the "Personal Nachrichten."
Naxos
Marc meldet sich zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs als Freiwilliger Marc volunteered in 1914, (during that time he lived in Ried near Benediktbeuren, Bavaria) "Bei einem Kundschaftsgang trifft ihn in der Nähe von Verdun ein tödlicher Granatdoppelschuß." On March 4, 1916 on a reconnaissance near Verdun he was killed by a grenade volley. http://www.dhm.de/lemo/html/biografien/MarcFranz/index.html Edited August 9, 2009 by Naxos

Murphy The Germans had used camouflage (Tarnung) in early 1916, employing expressionist painter Franz Marc to create nets and canvases to conceal German artillery at the battle of Verdun. Wonder where they got that from. It is however true that he was an arty officer.
Naxos
The Artillery Lieutenant Franz Marc was killed during a reconnaissance ride. A grenade fragment hit him at the temple. His Bavarian Artillery Regiment was stationed at Woëvre-Ebene (perhaps this clue let us identify the Regiment)
